9.19 South Lodge sits on Holdenhurst Village
Road at the end of the long driveway
to Hurn Court. The property dates
from the 1920s and is built in the
Arts and Crafts style with prominent
chimney stacks, feature catslide roof
over the entrance, overhanging eaves
and gables with decorative timber
framing. Although the property has
lost its original timber framed windows
to PVCu replacements the property
clearly reflects vernacular architectural
detailing and blends in seamlessly in
its sylvan setting. The contribution of
this property is also noted in paragraph
9.20 The Old Billiard Room dates from
the 1920s and although built for
a utilitarian purpose it has the
appearance of a cottage due to its
small scale. Its neat front garden
bordered by a hedge and timber
gate reinforces its cottage setting.
The property possesses architectural
features used in the early twentieth
century such as the use of pebbledash
render to the external walls, chimney
stacks, timber front door and timber
casement windows. The building was
originally the parish hall and is modest
in scale; however, its conversion to a
dwelling involved a rear addition to
double the accommodation. Despite
the extension the single storey nature
of the building ensures the Old Billiard
Room sits comfortably in its setting.
9.21 The Village Hall dates from the 1930s
and is reflective of the Modernist style
of architecture with its attractive Art
Deco porch and arched window to the
gable. The building is of a scale and
form that is reflective of buildings
within the Conservation Area and the
function of the building contributes
to the village character. Despite
the unfortunate plastic windows
and concrete roof tiles the building
makes an important contribution to
the character and appearance of the
