A Medieval Psalter ‘Perfected’: Eighteenth-Century Conservationism and an Early (Female) Restorer
of Rare Books and Manuscripts
Replacements and additions to the manuscript were made by Eliza Dennis Denyer after
receiving the manuscript in 1792, and before the death of Martha Denyer in 1796 (see notes,
ff. 2-3).
Provenance
The owners of the manuscript from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth century are
unknown. In the eighteenth century the manuscript came into the possession of Joseph
Parker of Exmouth (d. c. 1796), who presented it to Eliza Dennis Denyer in 1792 (see note,
ff. 2-3). Denyer bequeathed the manuscript to the British Museum upon her death in 1824
(see TNA, Prob. 11/1685).
