Innovating the Future: AudiologynoW! 2013
Are you ready to jump the curve? Well, those who attended
the General Assembly or the featured session by our keynote
Jack Uldrich have learned the keys to jumping the curve and
preparing for the future. This keynote led the audience through
great examples of how we must think beyond our current state
and focus on where our field is headed. Jumping the curve and
unlearning were phrases heard all around the convention after
this great keynote, who tied into AudiologyNOW!’s theme of
“Innovating the Future.”
Attendees and exhibitors
gathered, April 3-6, in sunny southern
California for AudiologyNOW! ®
2013 and celebrate the Academy’s
25th Anniversary. The convention
started on Wednesday morning with
the Academy Research Conference,
which focused on binaural hearing,
and learning labs; this conference
and the learning sessions were well
attended and included a great slate
of presenters. The Student Academy
of Audiology (SAA) also hosted their
first mini-conference themed “CSI:
Case Study Investigations.”
Wednesday night was busy
with parties and mixers! The AAA
Foundation Happy Hour with a
View was a big success and lots
of fun. Another Foundation event
was the SAA Cheers for Ears event,
which was sold out again this year!
Students were also busy at the SAA
Mix and Mingle, where students
got to show off their school shirts
and meet students from other
programs across the country. And,
finally, many attendees danced the
night away at the totally awesome
80s-themed Celebrate Audiology.
Audiologists were sporting neon,
glow necklaces, mullets, legwarmers,
and had fun singing along and
dancing to 80s music and enjoying
delicious food from local food trucks.
Thursday morning’s General
Assembly was a balance of past,
present, and future. President Deb
Carlson played a video of Dr. Jerger’s
address from the first Academy
convention in Kiawah Island. This
was an inspiring speech and the
Academy has posted the link to
this speech on the AudiologyNOW!

Coverstone, host of AudiologyTalk,
interviewed President Carlson and
President-Elect Bettie Borton on stage
for an AudiologyTalk podcast. The
interview addressed key issues about
the Academy’s initiatives and the
profession of audiology. This podcast
is available on the AudiologyNOW!
and AudiologyTalk Web sites. And, as
stated earlier, the General Assembly
ended with the well-received keynote,
Jack Uldrich.
Audiology Solutions exhibit hall
opened on Thursday after General
Assembly. There were over 190
exhibitors presenting this year and
the new innovative technology was
available from our partners in industry
was on display. The Best in Show
of booths were announced on Friday
during the Industry Connections
Reception. Congratulations to (small
to extra-large booth sizes): AuDBling,
CaptionCall, Auditdata A/S, Able
Planet, and Oticon on their wins! The
winner of the New Product Showcase
was also announced. Congratulations
to Ear Technology Corporation with
their DryCaddy product.
Innovative speakers presented
their latest research throughout
sessions on Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday. There were so many
session options that it was often
hard to choose just one to attend
for a time slot. If you found yourself

Northern did it again this year—
tough questions that also brought
a laugh. Congratulations to the
Phonemic Regressives who made it
back to the podium since their last
win in 2004 and the winning student
team, The Jergernauts. As the
convention wrapped up on Saturday,
it was a time to reflect on the new
information to be implemented in
our practice settings, shared ideas
with colleagues, and what changes
and innovations will prepare us for
the future of our profession.
Thank you to all of those who

knowledge, and our exhibitors for
making AudiologyNOW! in Anaheim
