It would, be more logical to the scientist to discuss the<br />
physical side of the question. But it happens that the scientist<br />
in this case is a psychoanalyst, who is more interested in<br />
the psychic part, and it is Lawrence, the artist, who is trying<br />
to discuss the physical side. However, I can understand this<br />
tendency, for it is in accordance with his vital philosophy, his<br />
physical universe, his "world of the senses", and his idea that<br />
’blood is basic". So it is interesting to notice that Lawrence<br />
in his middle essays took up the ostensible methods and terminology<br />
of science in order to refute the scientists*<br />
Fantasia of the Unconscious is a continuation of Psychoanalysis<br />
and the Unconscious.<br />
The central ideas are the quarrels<br />
with Freud and the theories on sex and the unconscious. Also,<br />
there is much good sense on such subjects as human relationships,<br />
education, and the right and wrong manifestations of love, for<br />
Lawrence often a counterfeit emotion. How Lawrence accuses Freud<br />
of pan-sexualism, i.e., he implies that for Freud sex is everything<br />
and everything is sex. He says of the Freudian sexual theories:<br />
"The real clue is sex. A sexual motive is to be attributed to<br />
all human activity."(FTU 17)<br />
But Freud always defended himself against this accusation<br />
throughout his works. He even says: "At the bottom society's<br />
motive is economic." (G-IP 321) And elsewhere he affirms that<br />
"the sexual instinct is not the only basis of all manifestations<br />
of the psychic activity, but the most important."<br />
