Spanish mobilized Christendom and launched a series of crusad<strong>in</strong>g expeditions<br />

which caused Algiers to develop its navy and adopt corsair<strong>in</strong>g as a means for<br />

thwart<strong>in</strong>g those aggressions. From then onwards, Algiers strengthened its fleet<br />

and turned it <strong>in</strong>to a formidable strik<strong>in</strong>g force that retaliated forcibly and<br />

effectively aga<strong>in</strong>st Christian assaults.<br />

After the crash<strong>in</strong>g defeat of its expedition of 1541, Spa<strong>in</strong> shifted <strong>in</strong>terest to the<br />

New World and did not reappear <strong>in</strong> the Mediterranean until about two centuries later.<br />

Although Spa<strong>in</strong> ceased send<strong>in</strong>g expeditions aga<strong>in</strong>st Algiers, warfare cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

on the high seas; but <strong>in</strong> 1732 it renewed <strong>with</strong> conquest of <strong>Algeria</strong>n cities and<br />

re-took control of Oran. Meanwhile other European countries—powerful and<br />

lesser powerful—jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>to the chorus but to no avail. Algiers resoluteness to<br />

stand up to Christian assaults won it the reputation of the ‘<strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cible city.’ At<br />

the end, Algiers survived to three centuries of pressures, <strong>in</strong>timidations, blockades,<br />

cannonad<strong>in</strong>g, and attempts of <strong>in</strong>vasion and consolidated its position as a<br />

Mediterranean power that <strong>in</strong>spired both fear and respect but also hatred. That hatred<br />

found expression <strong>in</strong> a variety of distortions featur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Algeria</strong>n corsairs as <strong>in</strong>veterate<br />

pirates that had to be exterm<strong>in</strong>ated. By do<strong>in</strong>g so, Christian countries legitimated their<br />

aggressions aga<strong>in</strong>st Algiers. Prevail<strong>in</strong>g laws and practice, however, while outlaw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

piracy, gave corsair<strong>in</strong>g and corsairs legitimacy.<br />
