B. Article Concern<strong>in</strong>g Passes<br />

Whereas on the 10th day of April, 1682, there was a Treaty of Peace concluded<br />

between the Most Serene K<strong>in</strong>g of Great Brita<strong>in</strong>, France and Ireland, Defender<br />

of the Christian Faith, &c. and the Most Illustrious Lords the Bashaw, Dey,<br />

Aga, and Governors of the City and K<strong>in</strong>gdom of Algiers, to which Treaty there<br />

was annexed a form of Passes for the ships belong<strong>in</strong>g to the subjects of the said<br />

K<strong>in</strong>g of Great Brita<strong>in</strong>; it is hereby agreed and expressly declared, that the said<br />

form annexed to the said Treaty be<strong>in</strong>g no part thereof, the Lords High Admirals<br />

or Commissioners of the Admiralty of His said Majesty’s Dom<strong>in</strong>ions, are at<br />

full liberty, <strong>in</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g the said Passes, to use the form of words hereunto<br />

annexed, which shall be good and sufficient to all <strong>in</strong>tents and purposes.<br />

Confirmed and sealed, <strong>in</strong> the presence of Almighty God, the 5th day of March,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the year of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1683, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the year of the Hegira,<br />

1094, and the 17th day of the Moon, Moolout.<br />

Form of the Pass.<br />

James the Second, by the Grace of God, K<strong>in</strong>g of England, Scotland, France,<br />

and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c. To all persons whom these may<br />

concern, greet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Suffer the Ship _______________________<br />

to pass <strong>with</strong> her company, passengers, goods and merchandizes, <strong>with</strong>out any<br />

let, h<strong>in</strong>drance, seizure or molestation; the said ship appear<strong>in</strong>g unto us by good<br />

testimony to belong to our subjects, and to no foreigner. Given under our Sign<br />

Manual, and the Seal of our Admiralty, at our Court at<br />
