On ascend<strong>in</strong>g the throne, Isabella’s grandson the Holy Roman<br />

Emperor Charles V (r. 1519-1558) was the most powerful sovereign <strong>in</strong><br />

Christendom. He <strong>in</strong>herited or conquered lands that <strong>in</strong>cluded the Spanish<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdoms of Aragon and Castile, the Netherlands, the Habsburg lands, and the<br />

Italian states of Naples, Sicily, and Sard<strong>in</strong>ia—<strong>in</strong> addition to the American<br />

colonies. With the wealth of this huge empire back<strong>in</strong>g him, and <strong>in</strong> league <strong>with</strong><br />

the Papacy, he cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>with</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>’s conquest policies and prepared to attack<br />

Algiers as a first step towards the conquest of North Africa. The preparations<br />

for his projected expedition were euphorically impregnated by a crusad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fervor. The Pope issued a bull not much different from those which <strong>in</strong>cited<br />

Christians <strong>in</strong> the Medieval Ages to seize Jerusalem and the Holy Lands from<br />

the ‘<strong>in</strong>fidels.’ He exhorted all Christians to jo<strong>in</strong> Charles V “promis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

absolution from all s<strong>in</strong>s and crown of martyrdom for all those who would die<br />

fight<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>fidels.” 51<br />

His crusad<strong>in</strong>g package also <strong>in</strong>cluded “numerous<br />

<strong>in</strong>dulgences for the would-be wounded and those who would contribute person<br />

or property to this enterprise proportionally <strong>with</strong> the services offered.” 52 In<br />

short, the Pope left nobody out provided that they jo<strong>in</strong>ed to the <strong>in</strong>vasion<br />

expedition aga<strong>in</strong>st Algiers.<br />
