altered the geopolitical concerns of <strong>Algeria</strong>n corsair<strong>in</strong>g. It was precisely that<br />

spectacular spread of corsair<strong>in</strong>g practices that gave birth to the western myth of<br />

the ‘terrible Barbary pirate’. Unable to beat corsairs on the high seas or not<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g navies yet, other European counties, particularly the Netherlands, Great<br />

Brita<strong>in</strong>, and France sought a diplomatic solution. The shift to negotiated<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>gs brought about what this research work calls ‘corsair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diplomacy’.<br />

While <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g early <strong>Algeria</strong>n diplomatic contacts <strong>with</strong> European<br />

countries, research has revealed that a sort of diplomacy <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g corsair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

activities started to take shape. By track<strong>in</strong>g down diverse elements perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to<br />

corsair<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the early treaties between Algiers and major European countries<br />

and compar<strong>in</strong>g them, it became evident to the researcher that those treaties had<br />

a common trait which dist<strong>in</strong>guished them from other treaties—like those<br />

between European countries for example. One may state here that one of the<br />

conclusions—perhaps the most important one—this research work has<br />

achieved is the identification of a dist<strong>in</strong>ct type of diplomacy, termed here<br />

‘corsair<strong>in</strong>g diplomacy’ which gave <strong>Algeria</strong>n corsair<strong>in</strong>g legitimacy. Corsair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diplomacy may be def<strong>in</strong>ed as a form of diplomatic <strong>in</strong>tercourse between Algiers<br />

and the Christian countries which regulated bilateral relations and corsair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

activities on the basis of three major pr<strong>in</strong>ciples which <strong>in</strong>cluded: tributes to<br />

compensate economic privilege, high seas control based on passports, and<br />

ransom or exchange of enslaved captives. Those pr<strong>in</strong>ciples were <strong>in</strong> fact the<br />

pillars of corsair<strong>in</strong>g diplomacy which, <strong>in</strong> addition to western laws and<br />
