United States entered <strong>in</strong>to Mediterranean trade it was also perceived as a<br />

Christian enemy and corsair<strong>in</strong>g practices affected its merchant shipp<strong>in</strong>g even<br />

though other factors were at play then.<br />

Meanwhile, <strong>with</strong> the extension of <strong>Ottoman</strong> rule to Algiers <strong>in</strong> 1519, the<br />

latter obta<strong>in</strong>ed military assistance which permitted it to set the foundations of a<br />

navy. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 16 th<br />

century, Algiers ga<strong>in</strong>ed experience and skill <strong>in</strong> the<br />

crucible of squadron warfare and crusad<strong>in</strong>g attacks. Its budd<strong>in</strong>g navy ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

strength and dar<strong>in</strong>g men <strong>with</strong> strong faith, discipl<strong>in</strong>e, and courage made it a<br />

match for European fleets. Maritime supremacy permitted Algiers to conta<strong>in</strong><br />

Christian attacks and rega<strong>in</strong> control of ports previously lost to Spa<strong>in</strong>. So long as<br />

Algiers ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed maritime control over its shores, Christian attacks were<br />

thwarted. After the resound<strong>in</strong>g defeat of its armada <strong>in</strong> 1541, Spanish attacks<br />

vanished and Algiers could enjoy the sobriquet of the ‘<strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cible city’ but not<br />

for long. The battle of Lepanto (1571) and political upheavals at Algiers ended<br />

<strong>Ottoman</strong> naval presence <strong>in</strong> the western Mediterranean and Algiers had to face<br />

alone other ris<strong>in</strong>g maritime powers but that had to wait for a while.<br />

Researched material has permitted this study to state <strong>with</strong> some certa<strong>in</strong>ty<br />

that <strong>Algeria</strong>n corsair<strong>in</strong>g took its true mean<strong>in</strong>g, that is to say chas<strong>in</strong>g enemy<br />

merchant vessels on the high seas, at the close of squadron warfare. From late<br />

16 th century up to the mid-17 th century or so, Algiers was unbeatable <strong>in</strong> that<br />

form of warfare. Not only did <strong>Algeria</strong>n corsairs ga<strong>in</strong> supremacy on the high<br />

seas but the renegades who jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>Algeria</strong>n fleet dur<strong>in</strong>g that period, ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

Dutch and English, took corsair<strong>in</strong>g to their homelands and even further which<br />
