Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, disda<strong>in</strong>, deceit, greed, selfishness and<br />

aggressiveness were go<strong>in</strong>g to be the characteristics of America’s new<br />

diplomacy towards Algiers.<br />

In general, American ships sail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Atlantic and the Mediterranean,<br />

even though they lost legal bear<strong>in</strong>g of British passports after 1776, carried on<br />

their trad<strong>in</strong>g activities as they had always done <strong>with</strong>out any major <strong>in</strong>cident—<br />

except for rumored news of capture or declaration of war on the United States<br />

by Algiers. 3 Those rumors were probably orchestrated by the major European<br />

powers or their agents to scare the Americans out of Mediterranean trade. The<br />

Americans on their side did not rel<strong>in</strong>quish trade and for that they cheated.<br />

Anticipat<strong>in</strong>g control at the sight of <strong>Algeria</strong>n corsairs, they recurred to host<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the British flag and produc<strong>in</strong>g forged British Mediterranean passports, 4<br />

a<br />

deeply-rooted illegal activity which the Americans <strong>in</strong>herited from their colonial<br />

past and amplified after <strong>in</strong>dependence.<br />

boy who grew up <strong>with</strong>out parental care and stands for strength and courage. As to his end, it is not<br />
