In RP and most accents in England, Australia, NZ and South<br />

Africa, the letters wh are pronounced as a simple w - so whale<br />

and wail are homophones (i.e. sound the same). In parts of<br />

Scotland, the USA and Canada, wh is pronounced w6, which we<br />

sometimes write as a separate phoneme, W.<br />
