2.5.1 Prevocalic r<br />

Like light l, r only occurs in RP if a vowel follows.<br />

Where no vowel follows (in pronunciation), there is no r: we say<br />

that in RP there is no non-prevocalic r. In other words, the r-<br />

2.5.2 Rhotic and non-rhotic accents<br />

Most accents of American <strong>English</strong> do not have a "silent r" - in<br />

other words, in American <strong>English</strong> r can occur if no vowel follows.<br />

Americans might say:
