pronunciation, look at the last sound (not the letter) before the
ending.
a) If it is fortis the ending will be s:
pots thinks paths hops laughs Jack’s Pat’s
pots þi~ks pAþs hops lAfs Dæks pæts
b) If it is NOT FORTIS the ending will be z:
lids eggs bathes robs loves Ted’s Meg’s
lidz egz beiðz robz lÆvz tedz megz
- “NOT FORTIS” includes vowels and nasals of course:
cows skies Joe’s Mary’s homes trains Anne’s
kauz skaiz D0uz me0r^z h0umz treinz ænz
c) If it is another sibilant (whether fortis or lenis!) the
ending is iz (RP and South of England) or 0z:
buses houses judges washes clutches faces Jess’s
bÆsiz hauziz DÆDiz woSiz klÆTiz feisiz Desiz
