Austria: Tortonian, Baden, Vienna Basin. Czechoslovakia: Lower Tortonian,<br />

Zidlochovice. Romania: Tortonian, Kostej in Banat. USSR: Middle<br />

Miocene, West Ukraine.<br />

Material. - About 150 specimens (ColI. No. F-171, Sec. No. 433).<br />

Dimensions: L 0.55-1.4; B 0.5-1.5; T 0.35-1.0.<br />

Description. - Test circular, regular, lenticular in cross-section; cham<br />

bers slightly inflated, circular, arcuate in cross-section; periphery acute;<br />

chamber sides fairly broad, undulating, flat or slightly sloping; sutures<br />

distinct; surface smooth, polished; aperture semicircular, somewhat flattened<br />

at the top, with a transverse quadrangular low tooth and lateral<br />

processes.<br />

Variability and ontogeny. The convexity of the chambers and the width<br />

of the aperture and tooth are variable. The specimen sectioned belongs to<br />

the mega I generation; PD 130 ~. The internal structure is biloculine<br />

throughout (Text-fig. 39/7).<br />

Remarks. - This species is very close to Pyrgo amphiconica (Reuss),<br />

but differs in having broader chamber sides, a more flattened test and an<br />

aperture which is less extended laterally. The topotypes from Baden<br />

correspond to d'Orbigny's illustration and to our specimens from the<br />

Upper Tortonian.<br />
