There were approximately 75 schools participating in this prestigious event. Because so many students wanted to be involved when the season began, Springfield Middle School had two groups entering the competition this year. The SMS flag line received the bronze medal and the Junior Regional A winter S p r i n g f i e l d M i d d l e S c h o o l N e w s guard captured the silver medal. The girls have been working very hard since November, practicing once a week spinning flags and rifles. The girls are under the direction of Ms. Jacquelyn Sartor who also leads the color guard at the high school. Her staff includes Brady Ford, Stephanie Irwin, Kristina Irwin and Clair Walker. By Steve Gwin, Principal JROTC Program Achieves National Honors The United States Army Cadet Command conducted the largest single service JROTC drill championship on April 6, in Louisville, Kentucky, with 2,200 of the best high school drill cadets in America in competition. These teams represented the top 66 high school Army Springfield High School News JROTC programs (out of 1,700 total) in the nation. This event is designed to find the finest Army JROTC drill unit in the nation. While schools may be exceptional in a single event or two, nominated schools are those that can best compete for the overall title of drill excellence. Springfield High School’s JROTC was the only team representing Ohio. With a very diverse group of exceptional talented drill units, the drill teams attending made for an exciting mix of powerhouse teams ready to display to the nation their abilities in a demanding “sport” with a military twist. Congratulations to the Springfield JROTC Drill Team for their eighth place ranking in Army JROTC national exhibition drill competition. What a great way to end the drill season. HOORAH! The “Army Nationals” are the annual home of the finest Army JROTC drill units in the country. Terhune Art Gallery at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township, the exhibit features the works of Holland residents Drake Dollison, Janelle Watkins and Isabelle Dickerson and Sylvania residents Cameron Mc- Cleod and Violet Stoycheva. “Owens’ Center for Fine and Performing Arts is proud to once again feature the finest works of art produced by our students,” said Wynn Perry, coordinator of the gallery. “The artistic expressions are extremely individualized and reflect the unique creative ability of each student artist, which will certainly delight exhibit attendees.” Owens’ Juried Student Art Exhibition features more than 100 pieces of artwork in the categories of fine art, photography and commercial art. Three Holland residents receive scholarships at Univ. of Findlay Three Holland residents recently received scholarships at the University of Findlay. They are Miranda Cornwell, Nick Naayers and Shawn Warner. Miranda is a junior religious studies/psychology major at UF. She received the Emerson and Laura Pelton Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year. A 2010 graduate of Springfield High School, she is the daughter of Bonnie and Ray Cornwell of Holland. Nick is a junior physical therapy major at UF. He received the Varsity “F” Endowment for the 2012-13 academic year. A 2010 graduate of St. John’s Jesuit High School, he is the son of John and Margaret Naayers of Holland. Shawn is a senior pre-veterinary medicine major. He was awarded the University of Findlay’s Glenn and Helen Stout Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year.
