Page 2 — April 16, 2013 — HOLLAND-SPRINGFIELD JOURNAL Drug take-back collection at fire department Apr. 27 Area residents are invited to turn in their unused or expired medications at a drug “take-back” day on Saturday, April 27. The Springfield Township Fire Department will assist the Drug Enforcement Administration with the collection. Locally, it will be held at Fire Station No. 3, 7145 Garden Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous, and no questions will be asked. Local residents are encouraged to empty their medicine cabinets, bedside tables and kitchen drawers of unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs. Last fall, the DEA’s state and local law enforcement partners, working at more than 5,263 locations, collected 488,395 pounds (244 tons) of medications from the public. In the five years of Take Back events, they have collected more than 2 million pounds–1,018 tons– of pills. The nationwide prescription drug take-back initiative seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft by collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at sites nationwide. Many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away–both potential safety and health hazards. According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than six million Americans abuse prescription drugs. That same study revealed more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription pain relievers got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications. Work to begin on old Route 24 The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District Two will begin work on South River Road, the old Anthony Wayne Trail, on Monday, April 15. Through April, South River Road from the Henry Lucas County line road to Providence-Neapolis-Swanton Road will be closed for culvert replacement. Motorists will be detoured using State Route 295, U.S. Route 24 and State Route 109. Effective April 22 through August, intermittent lane restrictions should be expected on South River Road from Henry/Lucas County line road to Dutch Road for resurfacing. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Additional closures for culvert repair will be announced. The project will be complete in August, weather permitting. Trustees approve demolition By William Renwand, Principal Dance, Dance, Dance The hills may be alive with the sound of music but so is the gym at Holloway Elementary School. The sound of music is filling the air for the students in Mr. Rinestine’s gym classes. However, it is not just the music students are listening too but dancing that is the real focus of the gym classes. Students in all classes kindergarten through fifth grade have been learning and practicing a series of dance steps for both coordination and aerobic exercise. DP Diner to celebrate second anniversary April 25 The DP Diner at the Dwelling Place, 8201 Angola Road, will celebrate its second anniversary on Thursday, April 25, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. “In the last two years, we have served over 3,600 people meals,” said the Reverend Josh Plaisance. In the first year the diner was open once a month, serving meals to area residents. “This year, we have been serving the last two Thursdays of the month,” said the pastor. Meals are served by a staff of volunteers who shop, cook, prep, serve and cleanup after each meal. In celebration of their second anniversary, the DP Diner will be serving grilled barbecued chicken, potato salad, baked beans, chips, salad and a dessert. Shop TALK Known nationwide for his stone carvings, sculptor George Carruth will be featured at the Waterville Garden Smiles location, 211 Mechanic Street, on April 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mr. Carruth signs his work at least twice annually. Compelled Church opens Holland location On March 28, the Reverend Tim Rabara and members of his congregation held a grand opening of the Compelled Church at its new location, 1007 South McCord Road, Holland. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted by the Holland-Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and chamber board members welcomed the congregation to the community. “We have a passion for those who do not yet know Christ, and that is the driving force for the church’s mission,” said the pastor. He noted that the church has multiple sites in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, allowing the pastors to reach more people. “The smaller campuses also offer the opportunity to build closer relationships,” he added. Owens Community College hosted its third annual Honors Program Symposium and Medallion Ceremony on Friday, April 12. Mirroring a professional academic conference, the event featured oral presentations by students on several topic areas. The Owens Honors Program recognized nine students for their educational success and leadership with the bestowing of an Owens Honors Program medallion. More than 100 students are members of the current Owens Honors Program on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses. To be considered for admission into the selective program, a currently enrolled student must have a minimum 3.2 grade point average with 12 credits completed at Owens. A new student must have achieved a high school 3.2 grade point average or be enrolled as a post secondary enrollment option student. Honors Program students must complete a total of 15 credit hours of honors courses, which includes nine credit hours of elective honors courses and two core courses titled Introduction to Critical Thinking and Honors Great Readings: Ancient World through the Middle Ages. To graduate as an Honors Scholar and receive the Honors Program medallion, a student must earn a cumulative 3.5 grade point average and complete an honors portfolio where they engage in directed research or service learning around essential questions or themes appropriate to their program of study as part of a capstone project, among other criteria.
