Springfield High School site of Ohio Highway
Patrol SRT training exercises for area police officers
Officers from local police departments, including Holland,
learn techniques for clearing a building while
searching for a suspected gunman.
An armed attack on a
school, mall or factory may
never occur in the area–or it
could happen at any time.
Seeking to be prepared
in case the unthinkable
should happen, Holland,
Ottawa Hills, Swanton,
Waterville and Whitehouse
police departments underwent
training over spring
break.
With permission from
Springfield Schools, the
jurisdictions utilized Springfield
High School to train
more than 40 officers. The
Ohio Highway Patrol special
response team (SRT)
spent two days instructing
officers on what to do in
case of a school shooting.
Holland Police Chief
Robert Reed organized the
class and invited neighboring
police departments to
participate.
The chief said the
department has not been to
a training class of this
nature since 2008. At that
time officers were taught to
secure the perimeter until
SWAT arrives, he explained.
But law enforcement
learned from Columbine
Owens CC hosts annual Motorsports Welding Night
Owens welding instructor Charlie Stewart shows the
artistic nature of welding.
Hundreds of racing car
and truck enthusiasts as well
as area residents interested
in welding careers turned
out April 4 for the annual
Lincoln Motorsports Welding
Night at Owens Community
College.
Held in the School of
Technology, the event featured
an ARCA truck, a 305
Sprint car, trucks, stock racing
cars, drag racing cars
and drag bikes.
“Lincoln Motorsports
Welding Night is a great
opportunity for area residents
to check out some of
the latest advancements in
competition racing with
more than 30 owners from
around the region showcasing
their vehicles,” said Jim
Gilmore, Owens chair of
diesel and welding technologies.
He noted that representatives
from local businesses
also were on hand to offer
advice to anyone choosing a
career in welding or the
automotive industry.
Local businesses included
Toledo Speedway, Norwalk
Raceway Park and
Attica Raceway Park.
Bowling Green State
and other incidents that by
the time SWAT arrived, the
shooting would be over, he
said.
He believes it is important
his officers undergo
training this year in light of
the increased incidents in
schools and on college campuses.
“Things change and with
Sandy Hook [Elementary
School shooting], it was
time to look at more training,”
he said, adding,
“There’s no reason to think
that it couldn’t happen
here, and my obligation is to
make sure my officers are
trained.”
“We don’t have a SWAT
team due to manpower limitations,”
and Chief Reed
said officers can’t afford to
wait for their arrival when a
shooting occurs.
Because the vast majority
of killings occur within
the first five minutes of an
attack, SWAT training was
revised to reflect the importance
of a prompt response
by local law enforcement.
“It’s critical for school
resource officers and police
officers to act immediately,”
The Elchinger family of Holgate brought their truck to
the show. The pickup earned honors as the 2012 Wolverine
Pullers 4WD Points Champion.
University’s College of
Technology displayed two
all-electric, grand prix racing
vehicles.
Tony Palumbo, director
of the BGSU electric vehicle
institute, was eager to promote
the clean and renewable
energy technologies utilized
in the motorsports
competitions.
A self-funded program,
motorsports utilizes students
from all disciplines, he
explained.
It is a reality-based program
that provides students
experience with the operation
of a racing enterprise
and research and development
of green vehicles, he
said.
“We need technology,
marketing, engineering,
journalism majors–anyone
can contribute,” he added.
The cost to assemble a
vehicle is $13,000, he said.
Also at the event were
representatives from Lincoln
Electric with virtual welding
machines.
Outside the technology
center, Owens welding
instructor Charlie Stewart
demonstrated welding, creating
a dinosaur from a rusted
piece of sheet metal.
“Welding is not dirty. It’s
really clean,” he told visitors.
The welding instructor
explained that when cutting
a piece of steel, welders
Chief Reed said.
With guidance from the
SRT, the officers learned
how to handle a situation
when only one or two are on
the scene. “The training
gives us tactics to use,” said
the chief.
He chose the patrol’s
SRT to teach the course
because troopers are “highly
skilled, and we wanted to
learn from the best.”
Even though many of the
officers weren’t training at
their individual school campuses,
they are still gaining
skills that can be employed
at various locations, he
noted.
Chief Reed described the
training as “realistic,”
adding that officers used
soap bullets, which are easily
cleaned up, to illustrate
gunfire during an incident.
He was surprised at the
number of soap bullets that
riddle the building during an
exercise as shots ring out
from both the shooter (portrayed
by a state trooper)
and the officers.
The goal of the program
is to equip officers with the
best tactics to stop the
shooter and minimize
injuries, he said.
Officers received instruction
on how to quickly and
efficiently clear a building
while searching for the
armed shooter, including
seeking help from victims
who may be injured and
lying in hallways.
If they’re conscious, officers
can ask victims if they
know which way the shooter
went, explained SRT
Trooper Bryan Mangin.
Officers also learnd to
keep a sharp ear out for the
sound of gunfire, heading in
the direction from which it
came and making sure each
room is clear before proceeding
down the hall.
“Their first priority is to
find and stop the shooter or
shooters,” said Chief Reed.
Trooper Mangin agreed,
noting that one of the hardest
parts of the job can be
walking past or over victims.
“I carry a tourniquet on
me,” the trooper said,
adding that if someone is
bleeding, he gives it to them
until emergency personnel
can safely enter the building
or the victim can be evacuated.
“My job is to stop the
suspect from shooting. If I
stop to help a victim, he [the
suspect] could kill more
people,” he added.
Clearing the building so
victims can be evacuated
takes time, said Chief Reed,
noting that officers also are
receiving first aid training.
And as additional officers
arrive and hallways are
cleared, treating and evacuating
victims can begin.
Trooper Mangin said the
officers’ second priority
after finding and restraining
the suspect is to treat casualties.
“We treat civilians
before we treat our own
unless the injury is
extreme.”
Chief Reed noted that
sometimes officers feel like
it takes an eternity to clear a
building, but “it’s very
quick, and every second
counts.”
While officers search for
the shooter, they also must
contend with personnel who
have undergone ALICE
(Alert-Lockdown-Inform-
Counter-Evacuate) training.
“They [officers] have to
deal with locked doors and
lights out,” he said, noting
that when they come across
a room like that, the best
they can do is perform a
quick visual check.
“It’s a bad situation no
matter what. We can only do
the best we can,” he added.
The Ohio Highway
Patrol SRT conducts training
throughout the year and
offers it to law enforcement
agencies statewide at no
charge. Highway patrol
cadets also receive the training.
Business can be an honorable and noble profession
Penta Career Center to construct storage buildings on campus
By Jane Maiolo
Two new storage buildings
will soon be constructed
on the campus of Penta
Career Center.
At the April 10 meeting,
the school board agreed to
advertise for bids on cold
storage buildings.
The first structure, a 60
by 75 foot addition to the
land lab storage facility, will
cost an estimated $165,240,
explained board member
Mark Schoenlein, a member
of the buildings and grounds
committee.
The building, which will
house landscape and other
equipment, will be constructed
to match the existing one.
“It will be more of a pole
barn,”explained Superintendent
Ron Matter.
The second structure, at
35 by 150 square feet, will
be located at the south wing
and will be equipped with
electricity.
Springfield Twp. trustees approve
demolition of home on Cheswick
Given the recent economic
downturn, which is often
blamed on poor business
practices, it comes as no surprise
that business in general
is not categorized as an honorable
or noble profession.
Dr. Dean Ludwig, chair of
the college of business and
leadership at Lourdes University,
said the recent business
climate tended to instill
the “greed is good” school of
thought and made the term
“business ethics” seem like
an oxymoron.
Dr. Ludwig, who holds a
bachelor’s degree from the
University of Detroit and
master’s and Ph.D. degrees
from the Wharton School of
Business, University of
Pennsylvania, spoke at the
April 2 Sylvania Area Chamber
of Commerce meeting.
He believes that when it
comes to running a company,
environment is everything.
“Unfortunately, some [business
leaders] don’t create a
positive environment,” he
said, adding that he is here to
“celebrate the positive environment
businesses create.”
The professor referred to
a Pontifical Council publication,
“Vocation of the Business
Leader.”
“It intrigued me,” he said
of the booklet, noting that it
describes how business is an
honorable and noble profession
if well lived. “When was
the last time you heard businesses
described that way?”
he asked.
He quoted from the book,
“When businesses and market
economies function properly
and focus on serving the
common good, they contribute
greatly to the material
and even the spiritual wellbeing
of society.”
The church document
describes obstacles to serving
the common good including
corruption, absence of rule of
law, tendencies toward greed
and poor stewardship.
“But for a business leader,
the most significant thing is
leading a divided life,” said
the professor.
He noted that a split
between faith and daily business
practice leads to imbalances.
To succeed, business leaders
need to balance the
demands of business with
those of ethical social principles,
Dr. Ludwig continued.
“I have met leaders who
give generously, nobly,” he
said, adding that they treat
employees with respect and
dignity.
“These are people you
can trust. They mentor others
to carry on in this tradition.
“There have been giants
in our community,” he said
of the Savages, Andersons
and other well-known families,
but he noted there are
many more who quietly go
about running their businesses
for the common good.
Those include the ice
cream store owner who creates
a recreational area for
people to congregate or the
business owner who galvanizes
employees to volunteer
in the community.
“They’re not just laying
bricks, they’re building the
cathedral,” said the professor.
Dr. Ludwig said the publication
describes business as a
“vocation. The document
implies that business is a
calling to do what God has in
mind for you.”
The document refers to
construction costs at
$255,150. “And the facade
will match our [career center]
building,” said the superintendent.
Bids for both buildings
will be opened on May 3.
Plans to demolish a
home at 337 Cheswick Road
grew one step closer to
fruition last week when the
Springfield Township
trustees awarded a bid for
the building’s demolition to
Paxton Demolition.
At the April 1 meeting,
Zoning Inspector Jacob
Barnes said the township
has “worked with the company
before,” and added
that they have had no problems.
The trustees approved
the company’s bid of $7,000
conditional that the site be
leveled and seeded following
demolition.
Because the bid was
$1,900 lower than the next
bid, Trustee Bob Bethel
expressed concern that the
bid may not include grading
and seeding.
He requested that the
zoning inspector, public services
director Mike Hampton
and administrator Leslie
Kohli review the bid to
make sure the company
plans to do the work.
Last November, the
trustees declared the property
to be a nuisance following
a report from Mr.
Barnes, in which the zoning
inspector noted that the site
was overgrown with vegetation.
He also told the trustees
the home was “beyond
repair” with holes in the
roof and debris, mold and
mildew inside the structure.
Other Business
In other business, the
trustees:
April 3, and at the recommendation
of Fire Chief
Barry Cousino, appointed
Houser to full time. “Brie
meets all the requirements
for the position and is in
good standing with our
department,” said the chief.
•Declared as a nuisance a
“We have tried contacting
six practical principles
required for business, the
first two of which pertain to
meeting the world needs
through goods and services.
•Businesses contribute to
the common good by producing
goods that are truly good
and services that truly serve.
•Businesses maintain solidarity
with the poor by being
alert for opportunities to
serve deprived and underserved
populations and people
in need.
“Successful businesses
identify and seek to address
genuine human needs at a
level of excellence using a
great deal of innovation, creativity
and initiative,” the
document states.
The third and fourth principles
look at organizing
good and productive work.
•Businesses make a contribution
to the community
by fostering the special dignity
of human work.
•Businesses that embrace
subsidiarity provide opportunities
for employees to exercise
appropriate authority as
they contribute to the mission
of the organization.
Good business leaders
must design work that is
“good and effective, efficient
and engaging, autonomous
and collaborative,“ according
to the publication.
“The way human work is
designed and managed has a
significant impact on
whether an organization can
compete in the marketplace
and whether people will
flourish through their work.”
The professor added,
“Simply put, good business
doesn’t treat human capital
as an expendable resource.
He recalled one businessman
who ran a successful
asked him how he became so
was hire the right people and
get out of their way. My job
is to find good people and
give them the resources to do
their jobs.’”
The final two principles
of the pontifical publication
pertain to creating sustainable
wealth and distributing
it justly.
•Businesses model stewardship
of the resources–
capital, human or environmental–they
have received.
•Businesses are just in the
allocation of resources to all
stakeholders, employees,
and the community.
“Entrepreneurs exercise
their creativity to organize
“When this is done effectively,
well-paying jobs are
created, profit is realized the
resulting wealth is shared
with investors and everyone
involved excels,” the document
states.
“I encourage you not to
dismiss these principles,”
said Dr. Ludwig. “I had a
friend who recognized his
success was not his to share
alone.”
The friend credited his
employees, noting that it was
through their hard work that
he was able to create sustainable
wealth.
The professor believes
that when the six principles
are honored, business can be
noble, and he encouraged
business leaders to read the
document, which can be
found at www.stthomas.edu
under the search “Vocation of
a Business Leader.”
“Whether you are a person
of faith or not, it is
important to reflect on
whether business can indeed
be a noble profession,” he
concluded. –Jane Maiolo
Drug take-back collection
at fire department Apr. 27
Area residents are invited
to turn in their unused or
expired medications at a
drug “take-back” day on
Saturday, April 27.
The Springfield Township
Fire Department will
assist the Drug Enforcement
Administration with
the collection.
Locally, it will be held
at Fire Station No. 3, 7145
Garden Road, from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m.
The service is free and
anonymous, and no questions
will be asked.
Local residents are
encouraged to empty their
medicine cabinets, bedside
tables and kitchen drawers
of unwanted, unused and
expired prescription drugs.
Last fall, the DEA’s
state and local law enforcement
partners, working at
more than 5,263 locations,
collected 488,395 pounds
(244 tons) of medications
from the public.
In the five years of Take
Back events, they have collected
more than 2 million
pounds–1,018 tons– of
pills.
The nationwide prescription
drug take-back
initiative seeks to prevent
increased pill abuse and
theft by collecting potentially
dangerous expired,
unused and unwanted prescription
drugs for destruction
at sites nationwide.
Many Americans do not
know how to properly dispose
of their unused medicine,
often flushing them
down the toilet or throwing
them away–both potential
safety and health hazards.
According to the 2011
Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration’s
National Survey
on Drug Use and Health,
more than six million
Americans abuse prescription
drugs.
That same study
revealed more than 70 percent
of people abusing prescription
pain relievers got
them through friends or relatives,
a statistic that
includes raiding the family
medicine cabinet.
The National Prescription
Drug Take-Back Day
aims to provide a safe, convenient,
and responsible
means of disposal, while
also educating the general
public about the potential
for abuse of these medications.
Compelled Church opens Holland location
On March 28, the Reverend Tim Rabara and members of his congregation held a grand
opening of the Compelled Church at its new location, 1007 South McCord Road, Holland.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted by the Holland-Springfield Chamber of Commerce,
and chamber board members welcomed the congregation to the community.
“We have a passion for those who do not yet know Christ, and that is the driving force
for the church’s mission,” said the pastor. He noted that the church has multiple sites in
northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, allowing the pastors to reach more people. “The
smaller campuses also offer the opportunity to build closer relationships,” he added.
Services are held at 11 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit the Web site at
PET OF THE WEEK
GARFIELD
Garfield is an 11-monthold
male cream shorthair.
His owners brought him into
the Toledo Area Humane
Society because they had
too many cats and could not
care for them all. There
were children and many
other cats sharing Garfield’s
home. He enjoyed having so
many playmates and hopes
that he will get as much attention
from his new family.
Garfield likes to play with toys, scratch on the scratching
post, and playing with catnip.
One of his favorite things to do is sit in the window and
watch the birds. He will even chatter and chirp at them when
he is feeling spunky. Garfield has never been around dogs
but he does have a lot of confidence and may learn to love a
calm, cat-friendly dog.
Garfield has been neutered, examined by a TAHS staff
veterinarian, is current on his vaccinations, and is microchipped.
If you pass by Crissey
a new playground and swing
structure has been installed.
Several years ago, the
Crissey Parents Club established
a vision for this wonderful
combination of the hard
work of a very dynamic
Crissey Parents Club and
outstanding community support,
this project finally
came to fruition on Saturday,
April 6.
More than 20 dedicated
Crissey families and staff
members gathered this day
to construct the new playground
equipment. As could
have been predicted, the
community build was a
great success.
The Crissey family extends
a special thank you to
donation of time and resources.
Without them, the
Area residents with a passion
SCHOOL NEWS
Brenda Engle and Kay Barbour with their puppet friends with disabilities.
From Mr. Devol’s Desk
New Kids on the Block
Kids on the Block, an internationally
recognized program
designed to educate
students about other students
with disabilities came to Holland
for their annual presentation.
Kids on the Block use
puppets to show students how
to understand and have compassion
for these disabilities.
They cover blindness, deafness,
mental retardation,
speech, and wheelchair
bound disabilities and
demonstrate how these students
deal with their disabilities
and how we can be
advocates for and support
these students.
Through the use of fun
and entertaining puppets,
Mrs. Engle and Mrs. Barbour
provide valuable information
in such a way that our third
grade students can't help but
learn. They sing songs using
sign language and learn how
some students can be valuable
members of society.
We value all children, and
all children can and want to
learn. Some just learn differently,
and that’s okay. Thanks
to the innovative and entertaining
way Kids on the
Block teach, our students
have learned we all are different
but we all are wonderful
creations.
