During Christmas break, six forestry students accompanied
Dr. Marshall Ashley to Haiti for ten days. Although
the object of the trip was to learn a little about tropical
forestry, much of our real education was with the social
and economic conditions there.
Environmentally, Haiti has been raped. A huge population,
over-farming, and a total reliance on charcoal for
cooking have combined to all but eliminate Haiti's forest
resource. Although growth rates are phenomenal, few trees
are allowed to grow over two inches in diameter as they are
cut for fuel. The consequences of deforestation have been
devastating erosion and a widespread change in climate,
reducing much of Haiti to a virtual desert.
In response to this problem, much of the aid to Haiti
is being channeled towards reforestation projects. Many of
these efforts, however, have met with little success in the
past. Drought, grazing by animals, as well as human caused
mortality have given seedlings little chance of survival. It is
extremely difficult to talk about the future benefits of
reforestation with a farmer who owns practically nothing
and makes less than $200 per year. Consequently, the more
successful reforestation projects have not argued about
aesthetics and long-term benefits, but rather have tried to
convince the farmers of the short-term economic gains to
be had by growing trees. Interested farmers are provided
with free seedlings which will not only supply charcoal in
four year rotations, but will sprout when cut (no replanting)
and will improve the soil by fixing nitrogen. Compared
with traditional methods, this technique has met with
remarkable acceptance by the farmers, and hence success.
While in Haiti, our travels included tours of the Pan
American Development Foundation's plantings, Operation
Double Harvest's massive nursery, and an enlightening tour
with Tom Greyhouse from U.S. Aid. While in Jermie, in
western Haiti, a couple of days were spent surveying, cruising,
and taking upper stem measurements in plantations of
blue mahoe and Venezuelan mahogany. These plantations
are owned by the Methodist Mission of Haiti, and our information
will be used to help formulate a management
plan for them. Since virtually no information exists on such
things as surveys and volume tables in Haiti, any information
is a valuable contribution to Haitian forestry.
Many people who leave Haiti conclude that the situation
there is hopeless and that nothing can change it. Indeed,
the grave problems facing the country seem overwhelming.
Despite exceptionally poor conditions, however,
the Haitian people are probably the friendliest in the
world. With some help, I can't help but believe that these
fine people can someday become prosperous. We owe it to
them to at least try.

Wood is nature's most versatile building
material. Pound for pound, ifs stronger than
steel, light, easy to work with and unsurpassed in
tone and texture. And, equally important, too,
it's a good natural energy saver.
For example, the sun provides all the energy
needed to produce wood free of charge. It takes less
energy to convert wood into usable products than is
needed for most other building materials. And wood
is a better natural insulator than brick, masonry or
metal.
Increasingly, wood is being used as an
alternative to other, more costly energy
resources. At Boise Cascade, we are installing
advanced systems that efficiently burn leftover
wood to generate the heat, steam and even the
power vital to our production. In fact, our wood
products operations now generate over 60% of
their own energy needs, releasing more essential
fuels like natural gas for other uses.
Our nation's energy problems can't all be
solved with wood, but it's one of several good
alternatives. We're working to make the best use of
this renewable natural resource.
