KIDS' CORNER
THE KLONDIKE SUN
Stories and illustrations
CIRCLES
WE have done the alphabet from A to Z; WE have done
our numbers from 1 to 13! NOW, in the New Year WE are
going to start on shapes! Pretty cool, eh?
There are circles all through nature. A flower has a circle in
the middle, our eyes are circular, our hair can grow in circles,
tree trunks are circular, (most of the time), and jellyfish look
like circles. Circles are everywhere!
I think we’ll start with a circle. The word ‘circle’ comes
from the Greek word ‘kirkos’, where the ‘ker’ part means
to turn or to bend.
“The world is a circle without no beginning and nobody
knows where it really ends.” (The Pajama Game, 1954)
Actually the World looks like a circle but it’s a little wider
around the middle. The Moon is also seen as a circle, as
well as the Sun.
Did you know that the Sun burns at 5,530 C°!!! AND it
is also 109 times bigger than Earth. AND it was formed
about 4.6 Billion years ago. AND it takes 8 minutes and 16
seconds for it’s light to hit the Earth!
Circles helped mankind to event the WHEEL! And GEARS!
Medieval scholars thought that the circle represented perfection.
They also discovered that a triangle could make
a perfect circle! (But that’s for the next issue!) See you
then…
