Now a report, that some circulation a few m I b, is
being revived to the effect that ihe cut-off will abandon the
Bro*nwood branch altogether and start out from Weatherforct
The Bulletin published what the Weatherford Herald had to say
about it a few days ago, and also a Weatherford report to the
Fort Worth Record. A glance at the map ought to convince anyone,
even a citizen of Weatherford and the esteemsed Herald itself
that this is hardly among the probabilities. The cut-off is
to be made to get the shortest line from Galveston to Texico. and
from there, over lines already built, to the Pacific coast. Take a
straight edge and place it on the map from Galvpston or Houston
to Texico and it will not miss Brownwood three miles, while it
leaves Weatherford over a hundred miles to the east of the line.
Is it at all reasonable to suppose that a transcontinental line seeking
to get the shortest route across the continent would go a
hundred miles out of its way just to pass through Weatherford,or
even to save the few miles of lailroaa building that might be
represented by the difference in distance from Weatherford | i
Texico and from Brownwood to Texico. Ti eed be n -
about an eight hour day for laborers of one class, while hired
farm hands, the 1'armres children, their wives and the farmers
themselves, average about sixteen hours labor daily. Such a
position would be inconsistent unless farmers advocating it abided
by the rule themselves. It may be that the time will come when
tarmers will work only eight hours daily, but it is inconsistent
to expect them to throw their influence for an eight hour day until
they are willing to accept it and apply it to their own affairs.
AUTOMOBILES IN THE COUNTRY. '
In many parts of the country there is much opposition to the
automobile^ using the public roads. Some people work themselves
into a frenzy every time they think of such a thing, and
threaten all sorts of things against the machines and their owners.
This is ail wrong. Automobiles are things that have come
with advancing civilization and they appear to have come to stay
until supplanted by something better. So it is well to make the
best of it. There is no need to become unduly excited. Sometimes
an accident occurs from them, but they happen oftener to
the automobilists than to the travelers they meet. Tho accidents
from that source are scarcely more than from run away wagons
from street cars and by no means as great as from railway trawl.
Horses will occasionally take fright and run a -ay, but hardly
more than from manv other - They boon accustom themselves
to the ma i and in Brownwood} now, horse dom
notice an auto any more than the do a ijarriage or a | assing
mowing machine. Fnoy are so frightful
