STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
At the 2013 State Championships, Emma O'Mara became a 2-time State Champion
by repeating a feat from 2007- she won the Floor Exercise title! As many of you have
seen by the framed newspaper article in the lobby, Emma took the level 4 State title at
age age 7, with a score of 9.35. Now as a level 8 athlete, she captured it again, this
time, scoring a 9.6! Congratulations, Emma!!
Emma Bailey had the meet of her life, scoring a huge 9.475 on floor, 9.25 on beam
On the bittersweet side, Alison Ball, completed her final competition of her Junior
Olympic Gymnastics career. Because of her upcoming graduation from High School
and 15 years of dedication to gymnastics, Alison was honored by USA Gymnastics,
along with only a handful of other gymnasts from Southern California, with a pair of
diamond earrings and a lovely speech. Alison will continue training AND coaching with
us until she departs for college.
REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
After qualifying from State Championships, our USAG Optional team competed
against the top gymnasts from Ca,Az,Ut,and Nv. Golden State had a strong showing!
Level 8, Emma Bailey, at her first Regional Championships, hit her strongest floor
routine and vaults of the season!

Level 8, Destiny Whitlock, in an amazing moment, rocked her Uneven Bars routine
and placed 6th in the region with a 9.475! (Pics on our Facebook)
Elizabeth Switzer, competing in the level 9 division for the first time, had her best meet
of the year. A connected bar routine, nailed vault and beam (with an upgraded skill
added) and..... A floor routine that took the competition by storm. With a 9.65,
Elizabeth Switzer has become Burbanks first Regional Champion!
Our girls recreational classes are all getting for our annual Flip Festival. They are
practicing their skills and routines and are getting ready to perform in front of all their
friends and family. If you see your child doing a skill over and over again, don't worry,
they're just making their skills perfect for you to see.
There are some exciting things happening here at Golden State. Your preschooler's
skills are blossoming for spring! During classes your preschoolers are busy working on
bars, beam, floor and vault skills so they can show them off during our annual Flip
Festival Show in June. We are all very excited to see you there!
TIP REGARDING W-SITTING:
We have noticed some of our preschool students W-sitting. This can be an unhealthy
habit for your child. Below IS some information about W-sitting, its effects and what
can be done to correct it.
WHAT IS W-SITTING? W-sitting is a seated position where a child sits on the floor
with their bottom between bent legs and their legs rotated away from their body, so the
legs form a W shape on the floor.
WHO DOES IT? Children with low muscle tone and/or hyper-mobile joints, and
children who have difficulty with balance.
WHY IS IT A PROBLEM? Prolonged W-sitting may lead to long-term effects on the
muscles and joints of the back, hips, knees and feet. Because the position provides a
wider base of support, the child's trunk muscles are not activated.
HOW DO I BREAK THE W-SITTING HABBIT? Parents should encourage their
children to sit with their legs out in front, both out to one side (side sitting), or crossed
in front (criss-cross applesauce). Depending on age, they can give a gentle verbal
reminder, such as "fix your sitting," or physically reposition the child.
WE CARE CAMPAIGN
PARKING AND SAFETY:
Parents, please be mindful of arriving to class in time to find legal parking AND walk your child inside to get to class on time. Double
parking in front of our building is ILLEGAL and UNSAFE at all times. PLEASE remember to carefully look for children, people, and
other cars when entering and exiting the parking lot. Please respect our neighbors' requests for NO PARKING in their lots or blocking
of their driveways. Thank you for your cooperation.
LOBBY AREAS:
Please be respectful of others by supervising your children in the lobby. Screaming and running through the lobby is not acceptable
behavior. Please ask for help with the TV or water, if needed. Please inform the Front Office Staff if you will be leaving the gym
during your child's class.
ANIMALS:
Please leave your pets at home out of respect for others, especially children, who may have allergies to or fears of cats and dogs, etc.
LOST AND FOUND:
Please regularly check the lost and found bin in the TV lobby for socks, jackets, toys, etc. We try to hang on to items for a least a few
weeks before we put them in the PlanetAid.org bin in the parking lot. For smaller items like jewelry, sunglasses, cameras, or cell
phones, please check with the office.
Thank you for subscribing and feel free to provide feedback!
Gymnastically yours,
