Health and Disease Based Emerging Technologies Module
Illustrate how biotechnology skills and procedures are utilized in medicine. This module includes five activities —
Antigen-Antibody Interaction: The Ouchterlony Procedure, AIDS Kit: Simulation of HIV Detection, In Search of Cancer
Gene, Western Blot Analysis, and RT-PCR: A Model for Molecular Biology of HIV Replication. Materials are provided for
ten setups. Requires polyacrylamide gels, sold separately. Thermal cycler, micropipets and tips, electrophoresis equipment,
and power supply are required, but not included. Note: Includes coupon for perishable materials. Redeem by
mail, phone, fax, or email.
Genetic Testing
The following Ward’s lab activities include Ward’s exclusive
QUIKView DNA stain, which stains and destains DNA bands
in under 45 minutes. The entire procedure of each lab activity,
including staining, can be completed in one, two-hour lab session,
or it can be divided into tw,o one-hour sessions. Each lab
activity is ideal for advanced high school and college classes
and comes with enough materials to run up to three gels, as
well as teacher’s guide and student copymaster. An electrophoresis
chamber, power supply, and 10 mL micropipets,
required, are available separately.
Ward’s Detection of
Leukemia Lab Activity
Identify Genetic Mutations That
Reveal the Presence of Cancer
Bring the actual genetic identification techniques
used in clinical labs into your own
lab. With this kit, students perform an electrophoresis
test on DNA samples to obtain
simulated results showing altered DNA
bands, which denote the presence of chronic
myelogenous leukemia. By studying the abnormalities in the bands,
caused by translocation of an oncogene from one chromosome to
another, students learn about the role oncogenes play in certain
carcinomas. The kit comes with enough materials to run three gels.
Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail,
fax, phone, or e-mail.
Ward’s Detection
of Breast Cancer
Lab Activity
Examine the Genetic
Mutation Pattern of a Prevalent
Hereditary Disease
Some families are at a very high risk for certain
types of cancer due to a hereditary inability
to correct certain types of DNA mutations.
Analysis of DNA can establish whether a person,
and her relatives, are prone to breast cancer, thereby providing the
family with the opportunity to take preventative steps to avoid developing
this type of cancer. The Detection of Breast Cancer lab activity employs
the same electrophoresis techniques used in clinical labs, providing simulated
results that look the same as real DNA test results. After obtaining test
results, students construct a family pedigree to understand the patterns of
heredity tendencies of certain diseases. The kit includes enough materials to
run three gels. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by
mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
Ward’s Detection of Colorectal
Cancer Lab Activity
Employ Genetic Screening Techniques
Used in Research Labs
Your students can perform the same test procedures that
scientists use to identify genetic mutations, signifying the
presence of colorectal cancer and its cause. Students run
electrophoresis tests on DNA and analyze unstable DNA
banding on the electrophoresis gel. DNA from a tumor
will appear as multiple bands instead of the normal two,
indicating the presence of cancer. After obtaining test results, students analyze the
results and construct a family pedigree to determine the patterns of heredity. The
activity comes with enough materials to run three gels. Note: Coupon included for
perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
Ward’s Genetic Diagnosis
of Sickle Cell Anemia
Lab Activity
Simulate a Medical Analysis
of the Hemoglobin Gene
People with sickle cell anemia have abnormal hemoglobin
molecules, which differ from normal hemoglobin by
a single amino acid — valine is substituted for glumatic
acid in the beta chain of the hemoglobin. This lab activity,
ideal for advanced high school and college classes, allows students to perform
agarose gel electrophoresis with bacterial DNA samples and sequence the hemoglobin
gene to identify which of the amino acids it codes for. The kit includes enough
materials to run three gels. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem
by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
Ward’s Transmission
of Hereditary Disease
Simulation Lab Activity
Study Genetic Testing Without
Electrophoresis Equipment
If you want to teach your students about
genetic tendencies toward disorders, but
don’t have access to electrophoresis equipment,
use our thorough three-part lab activity.
No equipment is required, keeping your cost
to a minimum. Students study genome data
from Fragile X syndrome, which causes mental retardation; analyze the traits of the
disorder; and construct a pedigree. In the second part of the activity, students use
pop beads and Ward’s Human Genome Poster, both included, to sequence and
analyze the chromosome fragment. Then students go beyond clinical lab work,
participating in a role-playing session of genetic counseling to understand ethical
and privacy issues related to genetic testing. It comes with enough materials for ten
setups, as well as a teacher’s guide and student copymaster.
