Screening of Bacteria
Lab Activity
Identify Unknown Bacteria Using
Three Actual Laboratory Tests
Students will perform a gross examination, Gram staining, and study under
the microscope, as well as a test of the bacteria’s chemical properties — each
test, employed in real microbiology labs, helps to identify unknown bacteria.
The chemical test uses the Enterotube II system, an accurate test method that
performs 12 standardized test in one step. Demonstration plates: Enterobacter
aerogenes, E. cloacae, Escherichia coli, Serratia liquefaciens, and S. marcescens. It
comes with enough materials for five lab groups, a teacher’s guide, and student
copymaster. Note: Includes perishable materials. Please specify delivery date.
Allow two weeks for delivery.
Bacterial
Enzyme
Three Tests
for Various
Bacteria’s
Enzyme
Production
Bacteria possess different
enzymes for
each chemical reaction
that takes place;
the presence of these enzymes can be used to identify the bacteria. The three
tests included in this lab activity detect the presence of catalase, which allows
the bacteria to grow in the presence of oxygen; hemolysin, which breaks down
red blood cells; and the presence of lactose assimilation enzymes, necessary for
the bacteria to use lactose as a source of carbon and energy. These tests can
also be related to the fields of medicine and industry — the test for hemolysis is
used to diagnose strep throat, and the lactose test checks the safety of drinking
water. Freeze-dried cultures; lac (+) Escherichia coli, lac (-) E. coli, Streptococcus
salivarius, and S. mutans. You will get instructions and enough materials to perform
each test once. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem
by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
Acid-Fast
Staining
Lab Activity
Identify and
Differentiate
Bacteria
Acid-fast stain is used
primarily in the identification
of pathogenic
organisms like the
tuberculosis bacillus,
Mycobacterium
tuberculosis, and the leprosy microbe, Mycobacterium leprae. In this activity,
students perform an acid-fast stain procedure on nonpathogenic cultures
of Mycobacterium nonchromogenicum, an acid-fast rod found in soil, and
Staphylococcus epidermidis, a non-acid-fast coccus that normally inhabits your
skin. In the process, students will learn to use sterile techniques, one of the most
crucial components of microbiology. They will also relate the characteristics
of acid-fast bacteria to drug resistance. It includes a teacher’s guide, student
copymaster, and materials for eight setups. A compound microscope with an
oil immersion lens, required, is available separately. Note: Coupon included for
perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
DrySlides
Fast, Convenient Method
for Biochemical Testing
of Bacteria
Oxidase is an acidometric procedure
for the detection of
beta-lactimase production.
Each slide contains four reaction
areas for performing multiple
tests. Simply smear a little
of the unknown colony onto
the coated 35 mm slides and
within 30 seconds to 2 minutes,
depending on the reaction, you
will see results. A positive result is
indicated by a color change. Comes with instructions. Package of nine.
Staphyloslide
Latex Test Kit
First Step in Identifying
Pathogenic Staph
A positive agglutination reaction
is an easy way to detect
pathogenic Staphylococcus.
This kit gives you results within
five minutes and comes
with enough materials for
100 tests. It includes two 2.5
mL bottles each of test and
control latex, and 35 reaction
cards. Note: Reagents contain
material of human origin.
