Health Activities
Students Address Their Own Health and Safety
These activities were developed around health topics such as breathing and heart fitness by the
Lawrence Hall of Science Health Activities Project (HAPS). Students will be able to integrate concepts
from social studies, communications, and language arts as they apply the scientific method to these
activities. Each activity can be performed as a demonstration or in individual setups and the results can
be plotted on a reusable wall chart.
Action/Reaction
Lab Activity
Easier and quicker than a
stopwatch, this batteryoperated
digital timer just
requires a tap to measure to
hundredths of a second. You
can measure response times
to light, sounds, and touch, as
well as explore sensory skills
through a series of handeye
coordination activities.
The activity includes a reaction
timer, batteries, game
board and pieces, wall chart,
labeling supplies, a teacher’s
guide, and activity packet
with three different activities.
Taste Discrimination Lab Activity
Map the Taste Sensitivity of the Tongue
This university-designed activity introduces students to several topics, including
genetics, physiology, and nutrition. Students will test their sensitivity to bitter,
sweet, sour, and salt with harmless chemicals to prove that different areas of the
tongue are more sensitive to certain tastes than others. You get enough materials
for 12 setups, an instruction booklet, and student data sheets.
Balance and
Movement
Lab Activity
Six different activities challenge
students to determine
the factors involved
in safety-related problems
associated with balance.
They will learn how balance
relates to basic body
functions, such as vision,
posture, and fatigue. The
kit includes wooden balance
board, balance rope,
foot pads, chart, labeling
supplies, a teacher’s guide,
and activity packet.
Lab Activity
Learn the
Capabilities and
Limitations of the
Sense Organs
Students perform a battery
of tests to determine the
responsiveness of their own senses, including blind spot and after-image testing,
flavor discrimination, taste bud mapping, thermoreceptor mapping, sensory
adaptation testing, and more! The activity comes with materials for 15 setups,
teacher’s guide, and student copymaster.
awareness of their hearing
and vision with the six activities
included in this activity.
They can test the effect
of lenses on vision and the
field of vision, as well as the
importance of two ears in
the hearing process. The kit
comes with vision disk, pinhole
viewer, lenses, eye chart,
masks, flashlight, rubber ball,
