ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I’ve been fortunate at Berkeley to work in a supportive and intellectually vibrant
environment. Wayne Getz has taught me much about the practice and culture of
science, and has set a powerful example by his integrity and humanism. Working with
Wayne has been challenging, exciting and satisfying, and he has been incredibly
generous with opportunities and his wholehearted support. Travis Porco has shared
freely and graciously of his compendious knowledge of disease dynamics, and has
shown me the beauty and pleasure in thinking a problem right through. Cherie Briggs
gave me most of my training in ecology, as well as insightful guidance on matters of
research, teaching and career. I thank Adam Arkin for our series of stimulating
meetings, which I always left with my head brimming with new ideas. Joe Eisenberg
provided excellent early training in disease modeling, and continued valuable advice
over the years. I thank Udi Isacoff and the Berkeley Biophysics program for first
drawing me to this great university, then granting me the freedom to discover and
pursue a surprising new discipline. Shizuka Gannon, Diane Sigman and the Wellman
office staff kept the bureaucrats at bay and otherwise softened the edges of institutional
life. Away from Berkeley, Brian Williams has helped me to expand my research
horizons to include global public health, and made possible a fascinating research visit
at the World Health Organization. I’ve benefited greatly from collaborations with
Sebastian Schreiber and Ekkehard Kopp, and separately with Alison Galvani.
My day-to-day life at Berkeley has been shaped and greatly enhanced by my
brilliant and eclectic peers. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from (and shared
