Recognition <strong>of</strong> the universality <strong>of</strong> individual variation in infectiousness for DCC<br />

opens challenges for future work. Of central interest for disease emergence is the<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> individual variation on adaptive dynamics <strong>of</strong> host-pathogen evolution (Levin<br />

et al. 1997; Dieckmann et al. 2002), including mutual invasibility <strong>of</strong> strains with<br />

different k. Established theories <strong>of</strong> control, such as the critical vaccination coverage<br />

required to eradicate a disease (Anderson and May 1991), could be revisited in light <strong>of</strong><br />

the distinction found between homogeneous partial and random absolute control, and<br />
