Century) in 1984 (English versi<strong>on</strong>) and 1985 (French versi<strong>on</strong>); Volume VII<br />
(Africa under Col<strong>on</strong>ial Dominati<strong>on</strong>) in 1985 (English and French versi<strong>on</strong>s);<br />
translati<strong>on</strong>s into Italian of volumes already published will begin so<strong>on</strong>. The<br />
Arabic versi<strong>on</strong> of Volume I was published in 1983 and that of Volume II<br />
in 1985; those of Volumes IV and VII are now being prepared for publicati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
The other volumes will be issued as follows:<br />
Volume III: Africa from the Seventh to the Eleventh Century (1985/86)<br />
Volume V: Africa from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Century (1985/86)<br />
Volume VI: The Nineteenth Century until the 1880s (1985/86)<br />
Volume VIII: Africa from 1935 (1986/87)<br />
Although the volumes are numbered in historical sequence, the order of their<br />
publicati<strong>on</strong> depends up<strong>on</strong> the completi<strong>on</strong> by the authors involved.<br />
The entire history is being issued first in English, French and Arabic.<br />
Other translati<strong>on</strong>s into European or Asian languages are planned, since <strong>on</strong>e<br />
of the primary objectives of the General History of Africa project is to inform<br />
the broadest possible public about the cultures and civilizati<strong>on</strong>s of the peoples<br />
of Africa. This goal, in turn, is part of <strong>Unesco</strong>'s mandate to encourage and<br />
develop communicati<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g the peoples of the world through a better<br />
understanding of <strong>on</strong>e another's cultures.<br />
Abridged versi<strong>on</strong>s of the General History ofAfrica are now being prepared<br />
and will be published in Kiswahili and Hausa, and also in other African<br />
languages. An editi<strong>on</strong> in the form of carto<strong>on</strong> strips based <strong>on</strong> the abridged<br />
versi<strong>on</strong>s is also planned, as well as audio-cassette versi<strong>on</strong>s in African languages.<br />
Scientific colloquia and symposia have been organized in order to make<br />
available to the authors as much documentary material as possible and to take<br />
stock of the most recent research <strong>on</strong> the subjects to be covered in each volume.<br />
The papers prepared for discussi<strong>on</strong> at these meetings are published in English,<br />
French and other languages in the series 'The General History of Africa: Studies<br />
and Documents'. The following volumes have already been published:<br />
1. The Peopling of Ancient Egypt and the Deciphering of Meroitic Script.<br />
2. The African Slave Trade from the Fifteenth to the Nineteenth Century.<br />
3 . Historical Relati<strong>on</strong>s across the Indian Ocean.<br />
4. The Historiography of Southern Africa.<br />
5. The Decol<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> of Africa: Southern Africa and the Horn of Africa.<br />
6. African Ethn<strong>on</strong>yms and Top<strong>on</strong>yms.<br />
