What do you think happens to the personality and sense of individuality in a child<br />

when he is taught that he is "nothing?" How do the people in this story seem to


feel about their lives? How is Equality 72521 different from the others? Give<br />

2. In Chapter I, the sentence “The sleeping halls are white and clean and bare of all<br />

things save one hundred beds.” is repeated three times. Why do you think Ayn<br />

Rand made this choice?<br />

3. In your opinion, what was the Council of Vocations’ reason for making Equality a<br />

Street Sweeper instead of choosing some other vocation for him?<br />

4. The old locks and lack of guards in the Palace of Corrective Detention indicates that<br />

prisoners never tried to escape. Why not?<br />
