WELCOME
Give your University course the finishing touch with an Honours year.
This year will transform you from someone who understands biology to
someone who does biology, with invaluable skills in communication, project
management and critical analysis.
In a fourth year
honours project,
you will have
an opportunity
to apply your
broad biological
knowledge
and skill set to
focus deeply on
one research
problem under
the supervision
of a member of
academic staff.
Our research scientists are leaders in their
fields and members of the School have won
numerous national and international awards
for their research including Science Minister’s
Prize for Life Scientist of the Year, Eureka
prizes (Scientific Research, Environmental
Research, Promoting Understanding of
Australian Science Research, Environmental
Education), NSW Scientist of the Year and
NSW Plant and Animal Scientist of the Year.
You can join this active research environment
by undertaking an Honours year with the
School.
Our Honours graduates find employment
in a wide variety of fields. A number of our
students go straight into positions in federal
and state government departments and
agencies and non-government organisations
within environmental and conservation
areas. They tell us that the skills they learned
in verbal and written communication and
critical analysis of issues along with their
broader biological knowledge have been
crucial to them in their work. Others enter
environmental consultancy companies, Zoos,
Museums, Botanic Gardens or research
institutions such as CSIRO.
Some use their skills to contribute to
fundamental medical research or to continue
into graduate medical programs. Others
choose to continue research in a PhD here
or overseas at a variety of prestigious
institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge.
Some of our graduates have chosen to use
their skills to play significant roles in science
communication and education. With an
Honours degree in biology behind you, the
choice is yours!
