The ide scanner wa designed a nd<br />

developed by A I Men<strong>in</strong> of Bendix Corporation<br />

under contract to Commercial<br />

Fisherie Divi ion of the A l a~ka Depa<br />

rtment of Fi:,h a nd Game. It is the<br />

product of the most recent advances <strong>in</strong><br />

e lectronic technology. The usefulness<br />

of thi unit has led the department to<br />

order another ide scanner for application<br />

<strong>in</strong> Cook Inl et and e lsewhere <strong>in</strong> th e<br />

state. Thi unit would probably be used<br />

to evalu a te molt migra tion <strong>in</strong> Bristol<br />

B '~y early <strong>in</strong> the year and subsequentl y<br />

\~ould be brought to Cook Inl et for u e<br />

<strong>in</strong> count<strong>in</strong>g adult a lmon escapements.<br />

Based on this season's expelience cer-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong> modifications ~ ill be built <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

new counter. It will have a variablebeam<br />

~ idth tran ducer a nd 10 <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

counters. Each counter \\ ill cover<br />

10 percent of the horizontal range of<br />

the beam. The new version \\ ill be particularly<br />

u eful <strong>in</strong> :,tream~ where high<br />

water velocity or debri content prec<br />

lude the use of the orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

30-transducer ~y tem.<br />
