Athletes of the week
Ally Schroeder
kicked her way
through a flurry
of arms and legs to outtouch
her opponent in the
50 freestyle sprint. Later in
the meet, she outlasted
every Manchester swimmer
with a victory in the
500 freestyle race.
Schroeder does it all.
Against Manchester, she
won a sprint and a distance
event. The week
before, she qualified for
states in the backstroke.
No matter where coaches
put her in the meet,
Schroeder is making
waves.
“I attribute that to her
mentality and her drive
and desire to improve at
every practice aqnd every
meet,” said Lady Knight
swim coach Evan Tuttle.
“That’s not something that
you can teach or coach
into kids. That’s something
that has to come from
within, and she’s got it.”
As a sophomore,
Schroeder has already
earned her spot in the center
of Southington’s lineup.
She leads off relays and
paces individual races. In just her second
varsity season Schroeder has
become a leader in the pool, but Tuttle
said that her leadership continues long
after the race has ended.
“She’s a genuinely good natured kid
that always works her tail off, and she’s
never shy about helping others when

always there to help me, too. She picks
up after practice. She’s always the first
one here and the last to leave. That type
of character helps a lot.”
It certainly pays off in the pool.
For her outstanding athletic accomplishments,
Schroeder is our highlighted
female athlete of the week.

SHS field hockey team:
Collected 18 saves over two games last
week, including 8 saves against Farmington
to push the game to overtime.

zeroed in on
the ball deep
in Southington’s zone and
sent it spinning out from the
net. Newington regrouped
for a second attack, but they
never had a chance. Rogalski
slid into the loose ball and
broke up the play for the
second time in 10 seconds.
In a scoreless battle
against Newington, Rogalski
was an iron wall.
“Mike is a really hardworking
kid, and he gives
you everything he has,” said
Blue Knight coach Dave
Yanosy. “He does whatever
you want him to do and
plays as hard as he can.”
It’s hard to single out
just one player in
Southington’s steel curtain
defense, but Rogalski is a
great representative. He battles
in the shadows, and he
doesn’t look for credit. In
Southington’s defense, it’s all
for one and one for all.
“It’s all those guys out
back. I have to give credit to
them all,” said Yanosy.
“They’ve been lights out all
year. They’ve all had games
where they’ve been the
unsung heroes. Defensemen don’t get a lot
of those accolades, but as a unit I can’t say
enough about them.”
Against Newington, it was Rogalski’s
turn to shine, but it was no surprise to
Yanosy. He’s come to expect that from his
senior defenseman.
“He’s a smart player. He wins a lot of
