Real People: Life amongst the orchards
From page 13
Rogers Orchards employees
90 to 100 locals. “We work
with the Vo-Ag School in
town to find kids interested
in farming and plant science,”
Peter explained.
“They are strong employees
with an interest in what we
do. People who live around
here always know the time
of year to come down and
get applications. In fact, this
weekend is a good example
of our busiest time. The varieties
and fall favorites as well
as late season sweet peaches
are all ready.”
Keeping employment
local isn’t the only thing
Rogers does in this way. “We
are huge advocates of buying
local,” Peter said. “We
practice what we preach. If
you can buy it local, you
should and many of our customers
do. We buy other
farms’ produce that we don’t
grow and have many partnerships
in and around
Life on an orchard in
the fall was always busy for
Peter and his siblings. “The
work we do in the fall represents
the whole year,” Peter
said. “We always have to
make sure that we’re picking
at the right times. As a little
kid, coming up here with
everyone we had to observe
how things worked. Even
when we were young on
school vacations, we learned
how to do what was needed
around the farm and store.”
Being all grown up now
and able to look back and
reflect on his own happy
memories of the orchards,
Peter appreciates hearing
everyone’s positive associations.
“When I’m in the store
it’s great to hear about others’
traditions. They always
talk about coming in for
whatever it is they love…
cider, donuts, petting the
bunnies… The traditions of
coming to Rogers Orchards
has been in their families for
Southington.
Using materials such as
torn or cut paper, children
will have fun creating their
own colorful images without
worrying about having
drawing skills. Participants
are welcomed and encouraged
to bring some favorite
decades much like mine and
people can recall coming
down with their grandparents.:
My personal tradition
was always to leave church
in the fall in New Britain and
drive to the orchard for a
bag of apples and a cup of
cider from the machine,
which was perilously guarded
by honey bees.
Around the home, Peter
said the family has heard all
the recipes and tried them
too. “There are always people
trying new things,” he
said. “It’s constantly open for
debate which apples make
the best pastries and pies.
It’s fun to interact with customers
and experiment. My
favorite apple is the Macoun
because of the flavor and
great crisp snap when you
bite into it.”
Neighbors of the
orchards have largely lived
there for generations as well
and raised their families in
the countryside areas of
town. The open air spaces
photos to include in their
collage piece. Materials will
be provided free of charge.
draw families, Peter said.
“The area is really beautiful.”
And good neighbors are
important, as sometimes
normal homestead activity
can take a back seat to the
orchard operations. “You
know it’s busy season when
the grass on the front lawn
goes unkept,” Peter said,
laughing. “But it’s overlooked
in favor of the beautiful
fall foliage and special
feeling around the
orchards.”
The neighborly feeling
extends outside the immediate
reach of the orchard too.
There are restaurants in the
area that use Rogers’ apples
in their cooking and apple
wood to flavor in their
ovens. Schools from all
around take advantage of
the learning opportunities
on Friday field trips to pick
apples in the fall.
In the many decades
Rogers has been in operation,
not a lot has changed
aside from some technological
conveniences. “It’s a real
hats off to the older generations
who started this business,”
Peter said. “They
taught us to be cautious,
especially in leaner years, so
that we can withstand. It’s a
great model. We hope each
season that there’s no huge
surprises, but you can’t predict
the weather. Regardless,
we’ve withstood economic
hazards. We stick to the varieties
we know and feel that
being conservative, traditional
will keep us going
strong like it has for over 200
years.”
After working 70 to 80
hours a week in the peak fall
season, Peter said it’s a huge
sigh of relief to pick and
store that last apple. “Fall is
full of long days for everyone
here,” he said. “It’s really nice
to accomplish all the hard
work and have many varieties
stored late into the season
for people to enjoy
later.”
Current fall favorites
like Macoun, Empire, Red
and Golden Delicious and
Granny Smith are coming
out now. Picking is available
at both locations on Fridays
and weekends and both
orchards have a store and
bakery on site. If by some
chance you haven’t made
memories at Rogers
Orchards, like Peter and
myself and so many others,
make sure you get there this
fall. (And no, I’m not a paid
spokesperson for the
orchard, I just truly love it
that much.) Happy picking!
