Friday, October 4, 2013 The Step Saver/ The Observer To advertise, call (860) 628-9645 Home is among the orchards Sarah Johnson A Place of Our Own Last week was my 29th birthday. I know… how exciting! But really, my birthday is not the highlight of the season for me, it just happens to correlate with all the fun autumn stuff going on. So, as I’ve done for every birthday since the dawn of (my) time, I headed off to Rogers Orchards in Southington for various apple-related treats. I’ve always gone to the store on the New Britain side of town, having grown up in that area. While there, lovingly petting the local bunnies near the big rock, I thought that if this place felt so much like home and warm memories for me, it must certainly hold some for the family who Southington Southington has run the orchard for decades. Peter Rogers is the son of the current family owners, running the farm, stores and orchards with his mother, father, sister, and brother-inlaw. He is currently one of two vice presidents of the local company. “My great, five times back, grandfather Chauncey Merriman started planting Baldwin apple trees on Merriman Farm over 200 years ago,” Peter said, sharing some history of the orchards. “For three generations, there were only daughters born to the Merriman family until finally, Sarah Merriman married Elijah Rogers, who owned nearby Lakeview Farm and started what we now know as Rogers Orchards. My father is the seventh generation of Rogers to run it.” Peter shares vice president responsibilities with Greg Parzych, who has a science background to complement Peter’s business background. “We work well together,” Peter said. “Greg works on plant science and production. I handle wholesale, retail and accounting.” Peter attended school in Southington then went on to Trinity College in Hartford, where he studied economics then briefly worked in that industry before returning to the family business. The Rogers family themselves aren’t the only generational group involved in operations around the orchard. According to Peter, many Southington families have had members going back decades working in the fields and in the stores. Families like the Huttons, of which father Rick is the general manager as well as the Smedbergs from town, have kids who come back to work on vacations and visit regularly.
