Primary hyperlipidemia with hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia has<br />

been reported in 2 related Beagles. 115 Finally, primary hypertriglyceridemia has been<br />

reported in 2 related Brittany Spaniels and 1 mixed-breed 28-day old puppy. 116,117<br />

Clinical signs and complications of hyperlipidemia<br />

In general, dogs with secondary hyperlipidemia display clinical signs associated<br />

with the primary disorder. In contrast, dogs with primary lipid disorders are often<br />

asymptomatic for long periods or throughout their lives, depending on many factors,<br />

including the type and severity of hyperlipidemia. However, some dogs with<br />

hyperlipidemia develop secondary diseases as a result of hyperlipidemia that may<br />

account for the development of specific clinical signs.<br />

Hepatobiliary disease<br />

Clinical studies and anecdotal observations suggest that 2 hepatic disorders might<br />

be associated with hypertriglyceridemia in dogs: vacuolar hepatopathy and gallbladder<br />

mucocele. 118,119 Hyperlipidemia-associated vacuolar hepatopathy has been anecdotally<br />

associated with hyperlipidemia in Miniature Schnauzers. Also, a gallbladder mucocele<br />

has been commonly reported in dog breeds that are predisposed to idiopathic
