<strong>Beilschmiedia</strong> immersinervis also appears to be similar to B. steyermarkii. About the<br />

As Allen (1945) reported, the type specimen <strong>of</strong> B. steyermarkii has few-flowered<br />

inflorescences, but the precise number <strong>of</strong> flowers in the inflorescences is uncertain because<br />

the inflorescences are broken. Another specimen <strong>of</strong> this <strong>species</strong>, which was collected after<br />

her description, has the inflorescences with relatively many ( 40-65) flowers.<br />

Brazil. Rio de Janeiro: G. Portella, Monte Sinai, 1935 (fl.), Nunes 313 (holotype; U<br />

not seen, isotype, RB).<br />

Tree, height unknown. Terminal buds pubescent with straight appressed hairs. Twigs<br />

terete, younger ones compressed, sparsely pubescent with appressed hairs, less densely to<br />

glabrous when older. Leaves opposite; petioles ca. 1 em long, canaliculate to flat above,<br />

glabrous, slightly darker than branches; blades firmly chartaceous, elliptic, (5) 8-9 x 2.5-4<br />

em; base cuneate, not inrolled, apex acute; leaf surface glabrous on both sides, lower leaf<br />

surface not glaucous; midrib immersed or impressed above, raised below, secondary veins<br />

9-13 pairs, raised on both sides, tertiary veins not percurrent, ramification coarse, squarelike<br />

with free veinlets, raised on both sides. Inflorescences axillary, racemose, 1.5-2.5 cn1<br />

long, pubescent with more or less appressed hairs, with 5-10 flowers per inflorescence;<br />

flower pedicels <strong>of</strong> the lateral divisions 0.5-1.2 mm long, pedicels <strong>of</strong> the central flowers up to<br />

3 n1mlong. Flowers ca. 2.5 mn1long, ca. 2.7 mm in diam.; tepals 6, aln1ost equal, ovate,<br />

ca. 1.8 mn1long, 1.2-1.5 mm wide, pubescent with appressed hairs outside, sparsely<br />

pubescent with appressed hairs or almost glabrous inside; stamens 9, outer six filaments ca.<br />

0.4 mm long, innermost three filaments ca. 0.5 mm long, pubescent, anthers ca. 1.1 mm<br />

long, all anthers 2-celled, apex <strong>of</strong> the anthers obtuse to truncate, anthers pubescent, glands<br />

<strong>of</strong> innermost three stamens globose; staminodia 3, cordate in outline, ca 0.8 mm long; pistil<br />

1.4-1.6 mm long, glabrous, ovary as long as the and gradually narrowed into the style;<br />

receptacle sparsely pubescent with appressed hairs. Mature fruits unknown, young fruit<br />

ellipsoid, the surface warty; young fruit pedicels not constricted at the base, covered with<br />

lenticels and concolorous with the infructescence axis.<br />
