Colombia (Cuatrecasas 22220, 22438) has quite dense pubescence on the lower leaf<br />

surfaces, which is very unlikely forB. costaricensis. I classified these Colombian collections<br />

as "B. costaricensis vel. aff."<br />

Four collections from vicinity <strong>of</strong> El General, Costa Rica (Hartshorn 2159, Skutch<br />

4389, 5158, Stork 3121), are also regarded as "B. costaricensis vel. aff." Although these<br />

collections share similar ramification with B . costaricensis, flowers <strong>of</strong> them have slightly<br />

longer tepals and a densely pubescent ovary, and fruits <strong>of</strong> them have the pedicel constricted<br />

at the base. Pubescence <strong>of</strong> ovary and constriction <strong>of</strong> fruit pedicel are regarded as characters<br />

sometimes inconsistent, so that more material is needed to clarify whether the collections<br />

with these characteristics actually represent a new <strong>species</strong> or the collections are only one <strong>of</strong><br />

the variations <strong>of</strong> B . costaricensis.<br />

Several collections fron1 Lin16n, Costa Rica (Herrera2418, 2467, Gomez 23614, Pittier<br />

16140, Robles 2027, 2039, Stevens 24491), have the ramification with free veinlets like B.<br />

costaricensis, but the ran1ification scarcely raised on the upper surface and the leaves are<br />

very large (ca. 30 em long). I decided to leave them as indeterminate because we have only<br />

fruiting n1aterial which is not enough for a proper classification. A few <strong>of</strong> the collections<br />

appear to have hollow stems, although it is not certain if they had ants inhabiting inside.<br />

There are a few collections from Panama which have the ramification with free veinlets<br />

like B. costaricensis, but the ramification almost completely immersed on the upper leaf<br />

surfaces (Correa 10237, 11035, Croat 26947,). Additionally, a few collections from Panama<br />

have the ramification totally immersed even on both leaf surfaces (Gentry 13789, 14015). I<br />

keep all <strong>of</strong> these collections as indeterminate because more and better material are needed for<br />

their proper classification.<br />

Tree, to 25 m tall. Terminal buds pubescent with appressed hairs. Twigs terete,<br />

compressed when young, almost glabrous or sparsely pubescent with appressed hairs.<br />
