In contrast to Murcia, Aragon<br />

is a north-east region of Spain<br />

with a characteristic continental<br />

climate of cold winters and<br />

dry summers, not very good<br />

to produce vegetables.<br />

However, cereals culture is<br />

consequently the basis of<br />

regional agriculture. In 2009,<br />

the hectares cultivated with<br />

wheat, maize or malt was<br />

more than the <strong>do</strong>uble than the<br />

area of other plants (Table 3).<br />

Around 600.000 ha of maize where cultivated in 2008, the whole<br />

agricultural area of Murcia (Fig. 3). This is a very important fact to<br />

understand the huge and increasing number of GMO plants that<br />

are being cultivated in Aragon, European leader in GMO plants’<br />

production.
