it has to acknowledge its own final impossibility. This tragedy can<br />

only be neutralized by undertaking renewed action: the writer starts<br />

writing again because he feels that not everything has been told in his<br />

last piece of work. In <strong>do</strong>ing this, the writer holds the words of Beckett<br />

in his mind: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again.<br />

Fail better.” [31] This is also the kind of attitude which corresponds<br />

to a democratic hope because it puts emphasis on action (it is about<br />

‘trying’ and ‘failing’, not ‘thinking’ or ‘praying’), and it recognizes the<br />

contingency of every action and hope.<br />
