the young German lyricist.<br />

With the appearance of Heine's Travel Sketi<br />

from 1826 on, however, the indifference of reai<br />

and critics gave way to curiosity about the w<br />

and irreverent writer. The bold mixture of p]<br />

and verse, poHtics and literature, humor and ir<br />

startled German critics. Though they felt obh<br />

to deprecate his attacks upon rehgion and mora<br />

and to censure his radical anti-government vie<br />

these critics could no longer ignore him. When<br />

authorities of the principal German states took<br />

step of proscribing his sketches, he immediately<br />

came in the eyes of many the brave warrior of<br />

pen and the noble champion of liberalism.<br />

The earliest English reference to Heine refle(<br />

this mixed reception accorded the young aut<br />

in his own native land and included a prophec)<br />

his coming greatness. The Foreign Quarterly<br />
