INTRODUCTION
FOR a century and more Heinrich Heine has
had an international vogue unsurpassed by
that of any other German poet, unless Goethe.
Great minds, in country after country, have been
stimulated by his recorded attitude towards eternal
problems and writers of diverse movements have
reacted strongly, in love and hate, to his unique literary
contributions.
What is the explanation? Why is he still felt as
a living force not only in his native land, defeated
in two World Wars, but also in the realms of the
victorious powers: America, England, France, and
Russia? What intellectual need does he satisfy? To
which of man's ever recurring moods does he appeal?
What is the magic force encased in his simple
verses that is still capable of stirring emotions of
old and young, generations after his physical death?
The present study seeks an answer to these questions
by investigating Heine's impact upon the English
mind and the reverberation of that impact
down the generations until our own day. The saga
