year 1918, a cotton press was also attached to <strong>the</strong> local flour mill. In <strong>the</strong> year<br />

1921, a foundry and two small scale oil mills were also set up. With <strong>the</strong><br />

extension in <strong>the</strong> railway work-shop, 2,000 people were now being employed <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

In 1926, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> rice husking and small-size flour mills, locally known<br />

as 'chakkis,' increased to eight. In <strong>the</strong> year 1937, hosiery work with handmachines<br />

on a small scale -employing 30-40 persons was - started in <strong>the</strong> town.<br />

Two biscuit and confactionery factories were also set up in <strong>the</strong> same year.<br />

Before 1942, almost all <strong>the</strong> factories worked by steam, but with <strong>the</strong><br />

erection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power house for <strong>the</strong> town, a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m began using electric<br />

power whilst many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m had <strong>the</strong>ir engines converted te consume fuel oil<br />

because <strong>of</strong> its low cost. With <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> electric power supply a few<br />

repairing work-shops were also started and <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> feundaries rose<br />

to six. In <strong>the</strong> year 1943, a 'silk weaving hand loom factory was also established.<br />

Since <strong>the</strong>n no more factories or industries have been started, except for <strong>the</strong><br />

Zari woaks, started by a Delhi refugee who was <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> works at Delhi<br />

and has come to Sukkur with many <strong>of</strong> his old workers.<br />

According to a personal survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town carried out<br />

in March, 1961, <strong>the</strong> existing-position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industries in <strong>the</strong> town has been<br />

shown in <strong>the</strong> attached table.
