Turkey comes first, Egypt,<br />
depending upon imported<br />
As regards flourmilling West Pakistan takes <strong>the</strong> lead. In fruit canning<br />
Palestine and Turkey o~cupy important places. Alchoholic beverages are<br />
prepared in Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Palestine. There are distilleries<br />
at Alexandria, Izmir and Baghdad. In <strong>the</strong> Levant distillation <strong>of</strong> Arab. a<br />
local beverage-is an important industry.<br />
Large imports <strong>of</strong> paper have a marked adverse effect on national<br />
economy because <strong>the</strong> consumption <strong>of</strong> paper is increasing rapidly. Izmir in<br />
Turkey has a big mill producing 22,000 tons <strong>of</strong> paper and cardboard but large<br />
quantities have to be imported. Within a few years, West Pakistan and<br />
Iran will have <strong>the</strong>ir own paper mills. In west Pakistan <strong>the</strong>re will be one<br />
paper mill at Nowshera and one cardboard mill at Rahwali.<br />
Lea<strong>the</strong>r tanning is not very important but lea<strong>the</strong>r goods are prepared<br />
on a large scale. Egypt has two tanneries and makes lea<strong>the</strong>r goods both<br />
by machine and hand, being self sufficient in this respect. Principal<br />
machine made articles are boots and shoes, <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> a great variety and<br />
beauty are hand made. Factories in Egypt are four, in Turkey two and one<br />
in West Pakistan.<br />
Matches are also produced in quantities sufficient for home needs,<br />
Turkey having nine, Egypt seven, Iran six west Pakistan two. West Pakistan<br />
has to supplement its production by imported matches to a certain extent.<br />
Glass work and pottery both have a bright future. Turkey ranks high in<br />
bloom glass work and decorative pottery. Attempts to develop this industry<br />
are being made in o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />
The Cottage Industry-<br />
Chronic lack <strong>of</strong> fuel, meagre raw materials and under developed means<br />
<strong>of</strong> communication have been responsible for <strong>the</strong> persistance <strong>of</strong> cottage<br />
industry. They were carried on III or near <strong>the</strong> important towns and<br />
maintained by single owner with <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir kinsfolk. In ancient<br />
times it was patronized by assistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir kinsfolk. In ancient times<br />
it was patronized by Ottoman, Sarrain and Kuznat gentry. However under<br />
<strong>the</strong> pressure <strong>of</strong> competition with cheaper, machine made foreign goods,handcrafts<br />
have not only deteriorated in quantity but in quality as well. The Middle<br />
