Comnunity Cevelopment Foundation<br />

A staff representative of the Comity Cevelopment Foundation working with<br />

Ibo refbgees in Assaba and Agor areas launched seven comnunity self-help<br />

projects to impmve living conditions, better food distrlbution and repair<br />

a w ar damaged hospital and villa=. Cash allocation by CDF .... $ 55,000<br />

A CARE representative spent ten days in Federal Nigeria with reg~rd to the<br />

relief needs md on Aqwt 11, 1968, a representative was anpointed on an<br />

indefinite basis. A third CARE man arrived in Lagos for one v~eek~s.consultation<br />

on October 16, 1968. Personnel costs reported by CAFE amounted to<br />

$3,927.<br />

CARE'S first shipment of supplies to Federal Nigeria was made in August<br />

1968 and the first to Biaf'm throw ICRC via airlift fMrn Fernando Po in<br />

December of 1968. Frchn its own resources, CARE shipped 1,351 tons of food,<br />

medical supplies, cloth and other supplies to Biafra and 228 tons to Lagos<br />

for a total of 1,560 tons through May 31, 1969. These supplies were valued<br />

at $610,500 plus shipping costs of $1,293 paid by CARE. CARE also provided<br />

$40,000 for local purchase of rice in the hugu area and for miscellaneous<br />

other local purchases.<br />

Curing the period January 1, 1968, throw February 11, 1963, the Direct<br />

Relief Foundat ion provided pharmaceuticals and supplies worth $155,219 and<br />
