Protein Deficiency 'Aid<br />

Cassava is a tube~root widely eaten in Africa. When dried and ground it<br />

is called "garit' in Nigeria. It is 99% carbohydrate. One by-product of<br />

the efforts to get protein to Biaf'rans is research that proved the Cassava<br />

leaves edible and that green leaves contain 7% by weight of protein and<br />

dried leaves 40% protein. Changes in food customs are being urged to get<br />

people to eat the cassava leaves, as well as the roots.<br />

For the flrst time, AID is inviting five countries to send senior government<br />

officials to the United States to take part in a shulated disaster exercise.<br />

?he purpose is to test government disaster plans, their reliability<br />

under extreme stress, and how to determine strengths and weaknesses. Interrelationships<br />

with voluntary agencies and ernergent groups will be studied<br />

also. The whole exercise will be a step in specialization of emergency<br />

disaster relief operations.<br />
