Shortly after the fire began the King put Minister of Interior Oufkir in<br />

The American Ambassador and Deputy Chief of Mission and other U. S. Mission<br />

fire. When General Oufkir requested U, S, assistance the morning after<br />

the fire, the Ambassador used this first hand information to declare that<br />

the disaster was of a magnitude to warrant U. S. assistance. He requested<br />

the U. S. military in EUCOM to provide 40 large tents by air fkom Europe<br />

for which reimbursement was made from AID contingency funds under the<br />

Ambassadort s disaster relief authority. The tents arrived at Rabat-Sale<br />

airport early on the morning of AprL1 28 and were delivered to the camp
