The Philippine National Red Cross sent all its available first ald and<br />
medical personnel to treat victims suffering from injury and shock. The<br />
Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Comnerce donated 400,000 pesos<br />
(b102,564.10) worth of disaster supplies. lhiversities sent student nurses<br />
and medical interns to help in the emergency medical center set up at a<br />
nearby public school. The Manila Times started a f'und raising drive which<br />
ended with 230,034.19 pesos ($58,98<strong>3.</strong>12) in cash donatials. The First Lady<br />
received cash donations for the earthquake victims amoun1:ing to 115,076.61<br />
pesos ($29,506.82).<br />
The Pasay City Uons Club offered to be foster parents ofany child orphaned<br />
by the disaster. The house of former Manila Mayor A. H e Lacson served as an<br />
emrgency h m for victim of the disaster when they wen? released from the<br />
hospit a1 .<br />
Pepsi-cola and San Miguel Brewery sent rescue team and f?ngineerhg equipment.<br />
Caltex Philippines sent three teams to provide the fuel needs of<br />
rescuers. Feeding centers were set up and administered by the Philippine<br />
National Red Cross, the Department of Social Welfare, Seventh-Day Adventist<br />
Welfare'Service, and several charitable organizations.<br />
Five government and private hospitals were used to accomiodate the injured<br />
victims in addition to the emergency medical center.<br />
Comnent on Msaster Relief merations by USAID/Manila:<br />
"The disaster was very well coordinated from the very start of<br />
the rescue opemtions up to the rehabilitation phase! of the<br />
living victims. Success was due to the coopemtion betoeen the<br />
govement and private sectors. Credit shouM also be given to<br />
the round-the-clock radio coverage of one of the mcio stations<br />
in Manik which broadcasted and solicited all the needs in the<br />
rescue opemtions until the last body oas found on tihe ninth<br />
day of the opemtions.<br />
ttHigh momle of rescue workers, many of whom suffered wounds<br />
and bruises during the operation, and the volwne of contributions,<br />
may be attributed to the involvement of President<br />
Marcos and the First Lady who often visited the disclrster area<br />
during the nine days rescue opemtions, plus the visits made<br />
by seveml foreign dignitaries including Ambassador and Mrs.<br />
Mennen Williams who were mng the first to arrive art the<br />
disaster scene.<br />
ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY THE U.<br />
S. GOVERNMENT<br />
At the request of the American Ambassador, the U. S. Military in the<br />
Philippines sent in rescue and relief teams to assist the Philippines<br />
Government in its relief operations. The teams consisted. of 90 Navy and<br />
Marine personnel from Sangley and Subic Bay and 31 fran Cllark Air Force<br />
Base. The teams were assigned to a section of the destroyed mby Towers
