DESCRIP'I'ION OF THE: DISASTER<br />

There is no descriptive Information available on this disaster other than<br />

that the fires continued over a period of time.<br />

ACTION TAKEN BY THE GOWRNMENT OF NEW SOUTH WALES AND LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS<br />

Rescue and relief operations were carried out by the New South Wales<br />

Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and numerous local and municipal area organizations.<br />

Existing facilities and organizatims were adequate. No new<br />

organization or Institutions were formed. There was a surplus of untrained<br />

volunteers. The organizations were reported to be effective and efficient.<br />

The few problerrrs encountered were of a minor coordinating; nature.<br />

Government agencies spent a total of $196,000 to assist needy families and<br />

an additional $65,000 was set aside to aid 26 families in rebuilding their<br />

hames .<br />

Several newspapers, private organizations, city councils and other agencies<br />

collected several thousand dollars for direct relief but the exact munts<br />

were not reported to any central source. Several private firms were<br />

reported to have mde substantial contributions to local flu?&. The<br />

Australian Red Cross spent slightly over $30,000 In direct cash grants and<br />

in the purchase of supplies for needy families.<br />
