that in Eastelm Nepal, damage<br />
did occur in other areas of<br />

Hydro-electric Station in<br />
Kathmndu Va1:Ley was floodled<br />
and an expected bumper rice<br />
yield in that same area was<br />
reduced by about 15%.<br />
ACTION TAKEN I3Y THE GOVErWMENT<br />
OF NEPAL AND IBCAL ORGANIZATIONS<br />
Normally poor corranw?llcations<br />
and transportation were -va,ted by the flood damages so that a report<br />
of the disaster did not reach Kathmdu until more than a week after it<br />
occurred. When the Prime Minister, Mr. Soorya Bahadur Thar~a, was informed,<br />
ments were made immediately with the U. S. Mission l'or use of its<br />
z t e r to make an inspection of the eastemst areas. A USAID officer<br />
accompanied the Prime Minister on the trip which involved visits to<br />
Taplejune;, Terhathum, Phidim, Dhankuta and Bhojpur. At each place, the<br />
Prime Minister made on-the-spot donations for the imnediate relief of the<br />
flood victims.<br />
During the third week in October, the Prime Minister for H(m-Panchayat,<br />
Mr. Nava Raj Subedi, was named Organizational Chairman of the Rnergency<br />
Relief P q m ~ Private and<br />
Public Organizations, as well<br />
as the general public, were<br />
asked to cont~~ibute to the<br />
Fund. The responses to this<br />
request were ;~dmirable.<br />
Hundreds of civil servants<br />
volunteered a day's salary<br />
as thelr personal contributions<br />
to the Ibd. As of<br />
January 15, 15369, the estimated<br />
cash contribut;ions to the<br />
Ehergency Relief Fund had<br />
reached Rs.208,914 or $20,891<br />
in cash and $6000 in kind.<br />
