DESCRIPTION OF THE DISASTER<br />
In early October, torrential rains<br />
fell throughout Nepal and also over<br />
a wide area in Indlia, East Pakistan<br />
and SiMclm, followed by severe floods.<br />
In Nepal, the dowfipour continued<br />
without let up for a firty-six hour<br />
period.<br />
The Arun, Tamur, Sun Kosi and Sapti<br />
Kosi Rivers overflowed. Where they<br />
converged water rose to 88.7 feet.<br />
.This was 20.7 feet higher than the<br />
previously recorded flood level in<br />
195'1. Many trails were inundated virtually cutting off villages from each<br />
other. Erosion and landslides followed in the wake of the flooding. The<br />
Kodari road was blocked by landslides. Many persons were swept away by the<br />
turbulent flood waters and drowned, and others lost their lives in the landslides.<br />
In the village of Khokling, for example, a landslide buried 13 members<br />
of one family. Sheep, goats, buffalo and cows were killed and there was<br />
extensive damage to crops. Five districts with a total population in excess<br />
of 580,000 were declared emergency areas. Hardest hit were the easternmost<br />
