Spraying began on May 17 and the operations were ccmpleted on May 26.<br />

Cost of the first 90 drums of malathion, USAF air delivery to Guayaquil and<br />

spraying by USAF planes was estimated at $71,000. ?he additional 10 barrels<br />

and extended use of spray aircraft brought total charges against the AID<br />

contingencyfundto. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $91,000<br />

The IEG also allocated approximately 108,000 doses of horse vaccine to<br />

canbat any further outbreak.<br />

During the entire operation, Mr. Alfred P. Pisani, USAID Bnergency Msaster<br />

Relief Officer, Major Richard Lawrence, USAF Mission/Guayacpil, and Mr.<br />

Donald Besom, USIA/Guayaquil were at the scene of the disaster and gave<br />

full assistance to the USAF survey team, the two crews of Ithe UG123 airc<br />

craft, and the survey team fram NCDC. They kept all involved agencies of<br />

the U. S. Government informed as well as officials concerned with the<br />

disaster.<br />

A signed statement was received from the GOE holdin5 the USG harmless in<br />

case of death, injury or destruction of property as a resu:Lt of the spray<br />

program. The GOE Minister of Health sent a letter to the 1knerica.n Ambassador<br />

thanking the USG for its help in controlling the epidemic.<br />

In analyzing the Inpact of U. S. assistance, the U. S. Mlssion reported<br />

that the inmediate action on the part of the USG had "enhar~ced the U. S.<br />

image in Ecuador. "<br />
